A strong defensive effort late preserved The College of Wooster field hockey team's shutout, and sophomore
Izzie Kline provided the lone goal in the Fighting Scots' 1-0 win over visiting Oberlin College on Tuesday evening at John P. Papp Stadium.
Oberlin sustained offensive pressure late, earning six penalty corners in the final five minutes of Tuesday's North Coast Athletic Conference clash. The Yeowomen looked to
Shelby Roth to tie the game, and Oberlin's sophomore was stopped three times by Wooster senior
Nono Kauffman, including on back-to-back chances within 10 seconds in the 57th minute. The Yeowomen had one final chance just inside the final two minutes. Senior defender
Emily Wachowiak denied that with a defensive save at the back post from the play that originated from the right wing.
In the second, junior
Frankie Zehnal's close-range scoring chance was stopped by Oberlin's
Mia Rubin. Kline outworked Rubin at the post to put away the rebound for the game's lone goal. The score handed Kline solo possession for the team lead in goals at four.
Elsewhere, senior
Brooke Benjamin's defensive play stood out. The defender stopped a developing scoring chance late in the fourth, clearing the ball beyond the circle during the Yeowomen's barrage of penalty corner tries.
Kauffman made eight saves for the first collegiate solo shutout of the senior's career. Seven of them came in the second half, including four during the third quarter, which saw Oberlin outshoot Wooster 7-3. Two of Kauffman's third quarter stops came on back-to-back Roth shots.
Samantha Finkelberg sent two more shots wide before Wooster was able to regroup defensively.
On the night, Oberlin outshot Wooster 16-7 and had 13 corners to just three for the Scots. Rubin ended with two saves.
Wooster is now 2-5 on the year with a 1-2 record in conference play. Oberlin dropped to 2-4, 0-3 NCAC.
Next, Wooster is at Wittenberg University (3-5, 2-2 NCAC) for an 11 a.m. contest on Saturday, October 3.
