Following 90 minutes of closely contested action, The College of Wooster men's soccer team allowed Wabash College to score the game-winning goal 54 seconds into overtime, as the Little Giants topped the Fighting Scots 1-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at a rainy and chilly Carl Dale Field.
The Little Giants (5-4-2, 1-1-0 NCAC) penetrated the Scots' (4-3-1, 0-1-0 NCAC) defense in a hurry at the start of the overtime period, and Femi Oluyedun used some nice foot skills to create some separation and then beat the 'keeper with the game's lone score.
Prior to that, Wooster had the best scoring opportunities in the second half, as Brandon Patera had two of his deep shots from the left wing smash off the crossbar. Also noteworthy, Noah Wagemann and Zach Jergan were both on the receiving ends of well-placed crosses, but Wabash's goalkeeper Matt Paul came quite a way out of the goal on both occasions to meet the players with slide tackles and disrupt their shot attempts.
Wabash almost lit the scoreboard in the first half, when Levi Noblitt blasted the ball towards the upper left corner of the goal, but Taylor Takacs leaped into the air and sprawled out horizontally to push away the would-be score.
Both teams fired off nine shots in the contest, with Takacs recording three saves, and his counterpart Paul totaling five saves. Wagemann led everyone in the match with four shot attempts.
The Scots will look for their first NCAC win this Tuesday evening when they host Kenyon College at 4:30 p.m.
