WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster's Taylor Takacs recorded his second-highest save total of the season, but Allegheny College, ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Region coaches poll, got a pair of shots past him for a 2-0 North Coast Athletic Conference men's soccer victory at Carl Dale Field Wednesday.
After neither side mounted much of an offensive threat during the opening 15 minutes, Allegheny (10-3, 3-1 NCAC) brought the ball deep into Wooster's (4-6-1, 0-4-0 NCAC) defensive half for two quality chances. Takacs saved the first in the 17th minute, but in the 22nd, Andrew Miller found an open Tyler Danzey on the left wing and the latter struck the ball just inside the lower right post to make it 1-0.
The Gators would make it a two-goal advantage late in the first half on another score to the lower right, this time by Brian Graham after receiving a quick pass from Alex Monzon.
The Fighting Scots defense did their part in the second half, and on the other end, they nearly pulled within one on a couple of occasions. In the 66th minute, Josh Dailey fed an open Noah Wagemann at the top of the box, but the shot sailed just high. Later, there was a scramble inside the box and Matt Naticchia fired a shot, only to be saved by John Lichina as he completed the shutout.
Takacs totaled nine saves, a couple on diving plays, while Lichina notched two.
Wooster faces another challenge Saturday afternoon, as nationally-ranked DePauw University (10-2, 4-1 NCAC) visits at 3:30 p.m.
