The College of Wooster men's soccer team owned a 1-0 lead with less than 15 minutes remaining, but wound up on the short end of a 3-2 decision to Denison University following a flurry of scoring during the final minutes of the teams' North Coast Athletic Conference match Saturday in Granville, Ohio.
Noah Wagemann's squad-leading fifth goal of the year, assisted by both Josh Dailey and Zach Jergan, gave Wooster (4-5-1, 0-3-0 NCAC) the one-goal edge midway through the first half, and it appeared that might hold up as the lone score. The assist for Jergan marked the first point of his career after the sophomore who also plays baseball for the Fighting Scots joined the soccer program this fall.
Despite a valiant defensive effort from Taylor Takacs and company, Denison (7-3-2, 3-1-0 ) came through with the equalizer during the 76th minute and then carried that momentum into another score just 3:06 later as the hosts were suddenly ahead 2-1.
The Big Red netted what turned out to be an important insurance tally in the 86th minute since Wooster's Adam Hansell added a late goal to pull Wooster within one. It was the first goal of the sophomore's career.
Takacs recorded a game-high seven saves on the day.
The Scots will host Allegheny College (9-3, 2-1 NCAC) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
