WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's soccer team allowed three goals in the first half and were never able to recover, as Malone University went on to win 4-1 in a non-conference match-up Tuesday afternoon at Carl Dale Field.
The Pioneers (3-2) outshot the Scots (2-2) by a 14-2 margin in the opening stanza. Kelvin Aquino scored to give Malone a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, but Wooster continued to hang around until a rough series near the end of the half.
With 4:36 remaining before the break, Josh Abend scored on a Rubem Miranda assist, and then less than two minutes later, Abend scored again to give the Pioneers a sudden 3-0 cushion.
Luke Koniarczyk, who scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Malone last season, gave Wooster some hope when he scored late in the second half to make it 3-1. Malone quickly ended any potential comeback, though, when Sam Erchick blasted in a clincher in the 85th minute.
Taylor Takacs was peppered with 23 shots in the match, and responded with a career-high 13 saves.
The Scots will look to get back above .500 when they battle Marietta College in a neutral site game Friday night at Gambier, Ohio.
