Wooster On The Road For First Time This Year (Football Game Notes)

Wooster Wk. 3 Game Notes (PDF)

The College of Wooster football team (2-0, 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) is on the road for the first time this season, as the Fighting Scots head to Ohio Wesleyan University (2-0, 1-0 NCAC) for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, September 18. Both teams are coming off blowouts. Wooster's air raid led to a 49-7 win over Kenyon College (0-2, 0-1 NCAC) on Saturday afternoon, while Ohio Wesleyan dispatched Oberlin College (0-2, 0-1 NCAC) 62-6 on Saturday evening on the road.

On The Air: Ohio Wesleyan will carry a livestream of Saturday's game at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/owu.

All-Time Series: Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan are deadlocked at 32-32-0. Ohio Wesleyan won the first all-time meeting 28-0 on October 5, 1901, in what marked Wooster's first game since 1890. Wooster had a campus ban on intercollegiate sports, so the Scots did not field a football team from 1891-1900. Wooster won the most recent game that counts in the all-time standings 16-14 on November 2, 2019. Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster met up on April 2, 2021 in an exhibition game, won by the Battling Bishops 52-38. That game does not count in the all-time series standings, as it was an exhibition contest.

Last Time Out Versus Ohio Wesleyan (counting game): Then first-year (freshman) Lake Barrett (Columbia, S.C./Hammond School) drilled a go-ahead 25-yard field goal with :42 remaining, and classmate Dorion Talley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) secured a 16-14 win over NCAC tri-leading Ohio Wesleyan by recovering a fumble after Barrett's squib kick deflected off the Battling Bishops' Braydon Chitty, capping a wild game on November 2, 2019 at John P. Papp Stadium. Wooster had to convert a trio of third downs leading up to Barrett's game-winning field goal. Ohio Wesleyan blocked Wooster's go-ahead field goal try with 5:38 remaining, and the Scots defense held firm with a three-and-out.

Offense Notes: Sophomore Carter Warstler (New Albany, Ohio/Columbus Academy) turned a screen pass into a 77-yard touchdown on his first collegiate reception on Saturday. Thanks to his 54-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter, Warstler became the first Scot to surpass 100 yards receiving this season. Wooster's four touchdown passes on Saturday marked the first time the Scots had four since Mateo Renteria (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) had four against Hiram College in 2019. Senior Troy Baughman (McKinney, Texas/Frisco Independence) struck early with a 2-yard touchdown rush at the 8:50 mark of the first quarter last Saturday. He now has a rushing touchdown in four straight games dating back to 2019, and has found the end zone on the ground in every game but one since the start of the 2019 season.

Defense Notes: Wooster started last Saturday's game with three straight three-and-outs, and Kenyon didn't have a first down until about the 1:35 mark in the first quarter. Senior Angelo Petracci (Youngstown, Ohio/Canfield) is tops on the team with 19 tackles and ranks second with 1.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore Andrew Armile (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) logged Wooster's first interception of the year last Saturday. Wooster now has five takeaways on the year, with four coming on defense. Talley scooped up a fumble recovery during Saturday's win over Kenyon. While the opposition has rushed for 359 yards - mainly due to Geneva College running the triple option - the Scots are allowing just 3.3 yards per carry. The Scots are allowing just over 111 passing yards per game as well.

Special Teams Notes: Barrett surpassed Bob Macoritti (1969-72) for 10th-place all-time on Wooster's career extra points list last Saturday. The junior is now 39-for-40 lifetime on extra point tries. Junior Matt Pardi (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty) has placed three of his five punts on the year inside the 20-yard line.

This and That: Wooster last scored at least 40 points in back-to-back games during the 2017 season. Wooster lit up the scoreboard for 58 points in a 58-25 win at Hiram College on October 21 and followed that up with 51 during a 51-41 shootout at Kenyon on October 28. Wooster started the 2017 season with 45 points versus Bluffton University (45-21) and 49 at Allegheny College (49-35). Wooster finished the 2017 season 24th nationally with 37.8 points per game, and the Scots are 26th in 2021 with 45.5 points per game thus far. Wooster's looking to go 3-0 for the first time since 2017 and just the second time since 2008. Ohio Wesleyan was the team Wooster beat in 2017 to move to 3-0. The Scots took that game 38-20.
