OBERLIN, Ohio – Junior Cate Barkdoll denied all three Oberlin College shootout attempts, and The College of Wooster field hockey team made all three of its for a 1-0 non-conference win on Thursday evening at the Knowlton Complex.
Barkdoll's diving save denied Oberlin's (0-8) Bella Tilford in round one of the shootout. Wooster (3-5) first-year Frankie Zehnal had just enough on the shot attempt to get in after deflecting off Oberlin goalkeeper Janny McCormick.
In round two, another Barkdoll diving save thwarted Meaghan Kramer's bid at tying the shootout. Junior Lizzie Hardy curved her shot around McCormick to give Wooster the 2-0 advantage.
Barkdoll recovered in time to drive Elly Scheer's shot out of bounds after the Yeowoman get a step on the Scots' 'keeper. Sophomore Melinda Lazenby sent Wooster home a winner, firing the decisive tally in once Oberlin's keeper went to make a play.
Oberlin threatened in the final two minutes of the second overtime, with Johana Horvath having a good look at the winner. Barkdoll was there to stop the shot and keep the game scoreless. Earlier in the second extra stanza, Hardy's bid at the game-winner was saved by McCormick and Zehnal's shot went wide of the cage.
Wooster controlled the action in the first overtime, as the Scots took seven shots and had two corners. Wooster could not get one past McCormick, who saved four shots in the 10-minute segment. Kramer kept the game scoreless in the 66th minute with a defensive save.
Wooster had several other good looks near the end of regulation. Wooster earned two penalty corners in the final seven minutes and both led to shots. Sophomore Audrey McKenna and classmate Brooke Benjamin were shooters on the first, but the Scots could not get through the Yeowomen back line. Hardy's shot on the final penalty corner of regulation was blocked on the way to the cage.
Wooster peppered Oberlin with 32 shots, while the Yeowomen had just eight. Fifteen penalty corners were taken by Wooster in the game to just three for Oberlin. McCormick ended the night with 14 saves. Barkdoll had one, while sophomore Nono Kauffman saved a shot in a half of action.
Next, Wooster (1-3 North Coast Athletic Conference) resumes conference play with Saturday's 1 p.m. game at Washington & Jefferson College (1-7, 1-3 NCAC).
