Volleyball Caps Classic with Nail-biting Five Setter

The College of Wooster volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Waynesburg University 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 16-25, 25-20, 15-8), finishing the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic with a perfect 3-0 record. With the win, the fourth consecutive victory for the Fighting Scots, the team improved to 6-4 on the season.

The opening set featured 14 lead changes and five ties. The score was even at 21-21, but a pair of Waynesburg errors and a service ace from senior Amelia Mitchell gave the Scots a 24-21 lead. A kill from junior Izzy Cozzie sealed the set for Wooster at 25-22.

Waynesburg (1-6) answered back in the second set, breaking a 21-21 tie with a 4-1 run to even the match at a set apiece. The Yellow Jackets moved in front after building an 18-13 cushion in the third set and pulling away for the 25-16 victory.

Wooster evened the match by taking the fourth set 25-20. The Scots built a 19-13 advantage and closed the set with a kill from senior Tamara Turner

The Scots scored four of the first five points in the decisive fifth set and never looked back, opening a 12-5 advantage before putting the set and the match away on a sophomore Jordan Laraway kill.

Three Scots reached double-figures in kills. Mitchell powered the attack with a match-high 17 kills. Turner and Cozzie added 13 kills apiece for the Scots while Laraway totaled six.

Mitchell and Cozzie tallied four blocks each in the victory. Senior Lucy Kinser totaled a team-high 20 digs while also serving up four aces. Sophomore Emma Fleck recorded a match-high 48 assists while also adding 13 digs and four aces.  First-year Catherine Muzilla reached double figures in digs, finishing with 13.

Waynesburg's offense was led by Paige Mortimore in the loss. Mortimore finished with 15 kills and 12 digs. Kristina Zadronzy tallied 11 kills while Madisen Dayton and Krista Wilson each recorded 10 kills.

Mitchell was named to the all-tournament team.
