The College of Wooster field hockey team scored first, yet in the end, it was North Coast Athletic Conference co-leading DePauw University walking away with a 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Reavis Stadium.
Wooster was awarded a penalty corner with 1:12 remaining in the first period. The Fighting Scots' first shot of the sequence was hit into one of the defenders coming out to the top from the cage. Wooster junior
Lizzie Hardy sent the rebound towards the cage where it was stopped by DePauw's
Olivia Streifel.
Following a Tiger foul, the Scots kept possession outside the circle. The ball was played to sophomore
Frankie Zehnal, who had inside position on her Tiger defender. That enabled Zehnal to drive to the right and take aim at the lower left corner of the cage upon entering the circle. The cross-direction goal in the final minute of the first marked Zehnal's third of the season. The forward remains second on the team in scoring.
DePauw drew a whistle for a penalty stroke in the 24th minute.
Ellie Lochhead beat Wooster senior goalkeeper
Cate Barkdoll to the right side of the cage for the equalizer.
Wooster did a good job to keep DePauw from getting a shot off on a penalty corner just over four minutes into the third period. However, the Scots were unable to get to an overpass on the wing, enabling the Tigers to work the ball back inside the circle. Once in front of the cage, Barkdoll stopped the initial shot from
Hailey Nowak. The rebound was kept by the Tigers, with Nowak working the ball to
Ella Harms for the game-winning goal.
The Tigers pulled away with scores from
Ashley Appleby in the 45th minute, Lochhead in the 50th minute, Lochhead again in the 54th minute, and then Appleby in the 57th minute.
DePauw finished with a 28-3 edge on shots and had 10 corners to the Scots' one. Barkdoll made 11 saves for Wooster, surpassing 275 career stops in the process. Streifel had one save for DePauw.
Wooster fell to 2-8, 2-4 NCAC. DePauw ran its record to 10-4, 6-1 NCAC.
Next, Wooster is at Kenyon College (4-9, 4-2 NCAC) for a 4 p.m. game on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
