The College of Wooster's
Coco Rodríguez scored for the second time this fall in the Fighting Scots' field hockey team's 2-1 loss at Kenyon College on Wednesday afternoon.
Kenyon looked to work possession to the sideline in the opening minute of the third quarter. Rodríguez had other plans, poking the ball away from an Owls' back. The senior moved inside the circle and fired in the score from about four yards out. It marked Rodríguez's fourth collegiate goal.
Kenyon broke the tie in the 48th minute.
Riley Chlupsa lofted a ball down the sideline to
Henny Maher.
Gigi Johnson was open inside the circle, and Maher was spot on with the cross from the sideline. Johnson gained possession and tucked in the backhanded tapper to the lower left corner of the goal for the winning score.
Kenyon's corner in the seventh minute of the second stanza resulted in the first goal of the game. Wooster senior
Cate Barkdoll made a sliding stop on an initial shot from
Olivia Wangerow. Wangerow tracked down her own rebound, drove right, and delivered the first goal of the contest from near the right post.
Wooster quickly earned a penalty corner following Johnson's goal, but did not get off a shot. Kenyon did not get very far in transition, as senior
Lizzie Hardy gained possession back for Wooster, drove towards the wing, stepped over a Kenyon defender's stick before rifling a shot towards the cage. Kenyon goalie
Sofia Chaves knocked it aside with the blocker.
Later in the fourth, Kenyon's
Maren Lawrence had a one-on-one opportunity with Barkdoll to put the Owls up two. The Scots' goalkeeper knocked away the shot from a couple yards out.
Kenyon had 17 shots to Wooster's 10 and had a 10-4 edge on penalty corners. Barkdoll finished with four saves, while Chaves and
Lucy Baker combined for five stops for the Owls.
Kenyon is now 5-9, 5-2 NCAC on the season. Wooster's record stands at 2-9, 2-5 NCAC.
Next, Wooster hosts Washington & Jefferson College (5-9, 3-5 NCAC) at noon on Saturday, Oct. 25. As the game is Wooster's final home contest of the season, the Scots will recognize its five-member senior class at 11:40 a.m.
