Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Barkdoll, Hardy WIn Senior Day in Double Overtime

Stroke stop followed by winning goal 30 seconds later

Lizzie Hardy's memorable senior day culminated with the game-winner in double overtime of Saturday's 1-0 College of Wooster field hockey victory against Washington & Jefferson College at John P. Papp Stadium.

Hardy closed in for what extended her team lead in goals to five, drawing out Washington & Jefferson goalkeeper Grace Erhard. That opened enough space for Hardy to drive the winner into the lower left corner with 6:09 remaining in the second extra period.

Just over 30 seconds earlier, Cate Barkdoll made one of the top saves of the senior's decorated career. A Washington & Jefferson player was tripped near the goal, resulting in the Presidents earning a penalty stroke. Jessica Nakanishi looked to win it for the Presidents in the lower left corner. Barkdoll's great read on the direction of the stroke, led to the senior having time to make the diving stop off the blocker.

Lily Giering's try at the winner following a Washington & Jefferson penalty corner 90 seconds into the second overtime was sent away by sophomore defender Emily Wachowiak. Wachowiak timed the shot up perfectly to redirect it back to the top of the circle with her stick.

In the first overtime, Washington & Jefferson had the first good look 3:52 into the stanza. However, a shot from just inside the top by the Presidents was hit into the chest of a teammate in front of the cage, resulting in a quick foul whistle.

Wooster had the numbers and a developing scoring chance late in regulation. Erhard came out to disrupt the flow of the play, and as a result, the ball rolled out of bounds. At the start of the fourth, a strong Wooster sequence was turned aside by Erhard, who made back-to-back saves on shots from juniors Audrey McKenna and Brooke Benjamin.

Wooster had 18 shots to just eight for Washington & Jefferson. The Presidents were held without a shot in the first half. The teams combined for 18 penalty corners, 10 of which were on Wooster's side. Barkdoll and Erhard made four saves each.

Wooster is now 3-9, 3-5 North Coast Athletic Conference on the year. Washington & Jefferson's record stands at 5-10, 3-6 NCAC.

Wooster has one game remaining in the season, with that taking place at noon on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Allegheny College (3-9, 1-6 NCAC).
