OBERLIN -- Receiving votes for the first time in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, The College of Wooster men's soccer team dug out of a 1-0 halftime hole to stay unbeaten, defeating Oberlin College, 2-1, on Wednesday.
With time running out - three minutes remaining to be exact - Wooster was awarded a direct kick with the game knotted up at 1-1. Senior
Elliot Miller stepped up, and the team's leading scorer with his left foot scored into the top right corner of the goal.
That was a culmination of a fury of attacks from the Scots in the second half, trying to not only comeback from a deficit but secure the win.
A corner kick opportunity in the 64th minute netted the equalizer for the Scots.
Ioannis Aristodemou sent the ball in and found the head of senior captain
Jackson Shoemaker, who directed it perfectly for his second goal of the season.
Before the game winner, Wooster created plenty of opportunities. Another corner kick led to Aristodemou having a shot blocked.
Jacob Fried had a shot go high off a free kick opportunity in the 73rd minute. In the 75th minute,
Aiden Faber had a look right in front of the goal, but the keeper was in the right position.
And then with 5:42 left on the clock, a tackle in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Scots. Junior
Aris Christodoulou took the shot, chose left, but there was Oberlin keeper
Lukas Verling for the save.
In the first half, Oberlin jumped to its lead thanks to a handball, which gave Oberlin a free kick at a great angle just outside the goal box. On the kick,
Nathan Thompson directed it past Wooster's wall of defenders to make it a 1-0 game in the 26th minute.
Wooster outshot Oberlin 18-4 and held the corner kick advantage 9-2.
Wooster moves to 11-0-4 overall, 3-0-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Oberlin drops to 4-10-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the NCAC.
In addition to receiving votes in the top 25 poll, Wooster moved to aa season-high second in the region poll and 33rd in the NPI ranking.
The Scots will host its senior day on Saturday when they welcome Ohio Wesleyan University to Carl Dale Field.
