The College of Wooster men's soccer team tied with Ohio Wesleyan University, 2-2, on Saturday.
Â
A lot was at stake for the Scots at Carl Dale Field on Saturday. Not only were they trying to send their four seniors off with a win on senior day, but they were also trying to protect or improve upon their receiving votes status in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll.
Â
Of course, the Scots were also trying to protect their unbeaten record amidst a crucial North Coast Athletic Conference contest.
Â
Despite Ohio Wesleyan (6-4-6, 2-2-2 NCAC) outshooting Wooster 7-1 to start the game, the Scots tallied the game's first goal in the 25th minute.
Â
Wooster broke free withÂ
Elliot Miller on the attack, but he was tripped up just outside the goal box to be awarded a free kick. From there, junior
Aris Christodoulou lined a shot with his left foot in the upper right corner to put Wooster ahead 1-0 in the 25th minute.
Â
Ohio Wesleyan responded with a goal from Gabe O'Reilly that hit off the left post and ricocheted into the back of the net just over seven minutes later.
Â
Yet, Wooster, resilient as ever, answered less than a minute later. With the ball deep into Ohio Wesleyan territory,
Ionnais Aristodemou took a blocked shot and sent the ball in, finding the foot ofÂ
Connor Shea for Wooster to regain the lead in the 33rd minute.
Â
Wooster (11-0-5, 3-0-3 NCAC) took a 2-1 lead into halftime and kept it until the 81st minute. That's when O'Reilly sent a deep ball into the box, right at the foot ofÂ
Matt Boyd who scored the equalizer.
Â
Wooster had one pristine look with seconds winding down, but a shot fromÂ
Evan Peratopoulos went high.
Despite the tie, Wooster must be happy with their performance, especially surviving an offensive onslaught from the Battling Bishops, who outshot Wooster 30-12 in the game.
Â
Wooster keeperÂ
Eddie Glucksman saw a season-high 30 attempts at him and came away with a new career-high of 11 saves. Ohio Wesleyan keeper
Sam Whitman made just two saves.
Â
Ohio Wesleyan has always been a tough program, but they're undergoing a change with first-year coachÂ
Mark Weiss. Weiss took over from
Jay Martin, who, with 47 years at the helm, was the winningest coach in NCAA men's soccer history (774 wins).
Â
Wooster has struggled against the Battling Bishops under Martin's tenure, having not captured a victory over the squad since 2004. Ohio Wesleyan holds the series lead at 44-11-9.
Â
The Scots sit with 12 points in the NCAC standings, good enough for second with games still underway on Saturday. Wooster will face another tough opponent on Wednesday in their regular season home finale as they welcome Kenyon College to Carl Dale Field for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
