Strong Second Half Nets Wooster First NCAC Win

Henegar, Bencic score in opening minutes of second half

A pair of successful offensive opportunities to start the second half put The College of Wooster women's soccer team over the edge on Wednesday, defeating Wittenberg University 2-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference action.

Wooster collected its first NCAC win of the season and handed Wittenberg its first loss by scoring both its goals in a span of 2:24.

First, Wooster caught Wittenberg (6-2-6, 2-1-2 NCAC) off guard as the Tigers tried to control possession by feeding the ball to its keeper. However, a bad bounce off her foot led to a defensive tackle from Julia Struck, lodging the ball free.

The ball went to the foot of sophomore Annie Henegar, who gave Wooster the 1-0 lead on the empty goal in the 46th minute.

Minutes later, Wooster scored on a more traditional opportunity. Struck found Henegar near midfield who found sophomore Josie Bencic running down the left side of the attacking midfield. Bencic's speed gave her some space and brought the keeper out to find the opening to score.

It was Bencic's fourth goal of the year, tied with Struck and Bella Crompton for the team lead. Henegar's strike was her third of the season.

Wooster's defense did the rest, backing senior goalkeeper Kameryn Nelson in net. Nelson made five saves from 12 Wittenberg shots. The Scots were even offensively, taking 11 shots of their own in the game.

Both teams had two corner kick opportunities.

Wooster improves to 9-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the NCAC. They head to DePauw University on Saturday for another important NCAC matchup.
