GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The College of Wooster women's soccer team collected its second North Coast Athletic Conference win in as many tries on Saturday, defeating DePauw University, 3-1.
Wooster was led by a two-goal, one assist performance from sophomore
Josie Bencic, who opened the scoring and later put the final nail in the coffin on the Tigers.
On her opening score, Bencic battled through two defenders on the right side of the box and sent her shot flying across the DePauw keeper to put Wooster up 1-0 in the 17th minute.
That score stayed true through halftime until DePauw found the equalizer in 58th minute of the second half. A corner kick from
Sophia Patrey found traffic in front of Wooster's goal and
Peyton Howard was credited with getting the ball across.
However, Wooster did not let the tie last for long. Bencic found
Annie Henegar on a full sprint near the top of the box to hit the eventual game winner in the 63rd minute.
The sophomore Henegar was met by the DePauw keeper at the top of the box, but Henegar was able to angle her shot past the keeper and watched the ball slowly roll cross the line.
Finally, Bencic put the seal on the game with her second goal in the 88th minute. Bencic worked from the top corner of the box to the middle and laced her shot past the keeper to make it 3-1.
Bencic now has six goals on the year, good enough for the team lead. It's her second multi-goal game and her first since the season opener.
Henegar's goal was her fourth of the year, putting her tied for second on the team.
Sophomore
Lucy Carlin was back in net for Wooster, collecting five saves in the win. Wooster outshot DePauw 9-7, while DePauw took seven corners to Wooster's five.
Wooster moves to 10-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the NCAC. DePauw drops to 9-6-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play. At the time of this writing, Wooster sits fifth in the conference standings.
Also of note with the win, coach
Geordie Brown collected his 375th collegiate win.
The Scots will look to continue its momentum with a trip to Oberlin College on Tuesday.
