Price, Divers Big Difference Makers in Saturday Win

Wooster men beat Grove City

First-year Hayden Price continued to shine, winning three events for The College of Wooster men's swimming and diving team in Saturday's 157-131 win over Grove City College. The Fighting Scots' women lost 198-90.

Price touched first in the 100 backstroke (51.32), 200 backstroke (1:57.57), and 400 individual medley (4:20.54). He edged out Grove City's Owen Hancock's 51.49 for the 100 backstroke victory, then smoked the Wolverines' top backstroker by over six seconds in the 200-yard race. Price won the 400 individual medley by a little over a second. Of note, Price's 100 backstroke time is the fifth-fastest in program history and the team's top time since 2021.

Wooster's divers scored 26 points, and that marked the exact margin of victory on Saturday. Senior Noah McDonald and junior Chris Caldwell were the lone divers on the men's side. McDonald took both boards, scoring 207.20 points in the 3-meter competition and a near-identical 207.85 in the 1-meter competition.

Elsewhere, first-year Evan Hasenkampf dominated the distance events against a Grove City team which came into the meet ranked within the top 50 in Div. III. Hasenkampf went 10:02.56 for the blue ribbon in the 1,000-yard race, then came back for the winning time of 4:52.61 in the 500-yard freestyle. His 1,000 freestyle time ranks sixth in program history.

Other men's winners included senior Matt Kaley in the 200 butterfly (2:01.07), senior Callum Glover in the 50 freestyle (21.44), and senior Boston Sullivan in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.36). Wooster wrapped up the meet with the winning time of 1:26.48 in the 200 freestyle relay. Senior Will Laymon, senior Will Laubacher, Sullivan, and Glover comprised the Scots' top relay.

Senior Emma Humbert scored two of Wooster's three wins on the women's side. The senior paced the field in the 200 freestyle (1:59.83) and 500 freestyle (5:21.25). Junior Rachel Frank's top billing in the 1,000 freestyle went in the books at 11:01.29.

First-year Elena Sandifer backed Humbert up in the 200 freestyle with the runner-up time of 2:00.68. Classmate Reese Lucas had the second-place time of 1:02.91 in the 100 backstroke, as did Sandifer in the 100 freestyle (55.59).

Elsewhere, sophomore Maggie Layne went 2:39.29 in the 200 breaststroke, which was the runner-up time, and Frank backed Humbert up in the 500 freestyle, finishing second with a 5:24.36. Sophomore Elizabeth Theobald's 1:02.03 in the 100 butterfly ranked second in the field, while Sandifer, junior Sylvia Krieg, Lucas, and senior Keara Wiley posted a 1:44.25 in the 200 freestyle relay for second.

Next, Wooster is at Westminster College for a 1 p.m. dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 22.
