COLUMBUS -- The College of Wooster women's basketball team battled Capital University on Tuesday but fell in the final minutes, 61-56.
Â
Wooster had a pair of chances to either tie or take the lead with 24 seconds remaining but turned the ball over both times as Capital hit four free throws to put the game away.
Â
SophomoreÂ
Mackenzie Riccitelli led Wooster with 12 points, despite a 4-of-20 showing from the floor. Riccitelli also grabbed six rebounds and collected six steals.
Â
JuniorÂ
Ace Sturdivant added 11 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals. First-yearÂ
Pink Sturdivant scored nine points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while juniorÂ
Abby Henegar added nine points herself.
Â
Capital had four score in double figures, led byÂ
Kendall Spreen's 14 points.Â
Samaree Perkins totaled 13 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double.
Â
Wooster started off hot, using a 7-0 run fueled by a pair of buckets from Henegar and a 3-pointer from seniorÂ
Ella Dean to pull ahead 13-5.
Â
While Wooster led 13-10 after the first, Capital reversed its fortunes in the second. The Comets used a game-best 10-0 run near the end of the quarter to turn a five-point deficit to a 25-20 lead at halftime.
Â
Capital led by as many as 10 midway through the third before Wooster put forth their best run of the game at nine unanswered. The Scots concluded the run with back-to-back 3-pointers from Henegar andÂ
Ellery Kloek and found themselves trailing by just three at 39-36 to end the quarter.
Â
In the fourth,
Ace Sturdivant hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 41 and the next trip down gave Wooster the lead after connecting on an and-one opportunity.
Â
Wooster went a bit cold for a stretch, which allowed Capital to regain the lead and push it up to eight at 53-45. Yet, Wooster got hot again, as
Pink Sturdivant scored five points in a 7-0 run which included her own successful and-one play.
Â
The Scots could only get as close to one point, at 53-52 and later at 57-56 with 24 seconds remaining, as turnovers spoiled a chance for victory.
Â
While turnovers were a factor late, Capital still committed more than the Scots, 21-20. The rebounding battle was also close, with Capital holding the advantage 41-40.
Â
Wooster also had the slight edge in field goal percentage, shooting 34 percent to 33 percent. However, Capital shot 35 percent from range to Wooster's 28 percent.
Â
Capital stays undefeated at 5-0 with the win, while Wooster falls to 4-2. The Scots travel to Oberlin College on Dec. 3 for its first taste of North Coast Athletic Conference play.
