Scots' Accuracy Off in NCAC Opener

Wooster falls to Oberlin 58-48

OBERLIN – The College of Wooster women's basketball team failed to reach the 50-point mark for the first time this season and suffered a 58-48 loss to Oberlin College in the teams' North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday.

Shooting was a struggle all night for the Scots, shooting just 25 percent (15-60) from the court and 18 percent (4-22) from range. Oberlin was not much better but improved as the game went along, finishing 41 percent (21-51) from the floor.

Oberlin was led by a 19-point, 8-rebound performance from Angela Kumler.

Wooster received 16 points and a team-high eight steals and seven rebounds from sophomore Mackenzie RiccitelliAce Sturdivant finished with 11 points, while Pink Sturdivant and Abby Henegar each scored six points.

Oberlin used the middle quarters to gain some distance from the Scots after the first quarter saw Wooster lead 9-8.

Wooster scored the first five points of the game and held Oberlin scoreless for the first 3 and a half minutes. However, Wooster could not pull away and needed a 3-pointer from Ace Sturdivant with 38 seconds left to lead after one quarter of play.

Oberlin had its best scoring run in the second quarter, using a 9-0 stretch to take a 19-11 lead. Wooster used the latter half of the quarter to score nine of its 11 second quarter points to cut Oberlin's lead at halftime to 22-20.

The Yeowomen led by as many as 11 late in the third, leading 40-32 entering the fourth.
In the fourth, Wooster had its best run where they scored six straight, capped by a three-pointer from Henegar. That cut Oberlin's lead to 45-44 with 3:12 remaining.

Oberlin killed Wooster's momentum on the next trip down. They grabbed an offensive rebound and answered with a 3-pointer to lead 48-44.

Wooster failed to score another field goal for the remainder of the game, hitting just four free throws in the final three minutes.

Oberlin (2-4, 1-0 NCAC) outrebounded Wooster 40-37 and outscored them in the paint 30-12. Wooster (4-3, 0-1 NCAC) committed fewer turnovers (21-18) and scored more points off turnovers (14-11).
