The College of Wooster men's basketball team posted a season-low six turnovers, but was not strong in other areas the Fighting Scots traditionally dominate on the stat sheet, resulting in a 77-65 Saturday afternoon loss to DePauw University at Neal Fieldhouse in Greencastle, Indiana.
Wooster's (3-5, 1-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) six turnovers marked the fewest since the Scots had just five in a Dec. 7, 2024 win at Case Western Reserve University. DePauw (7-2, 3-0 NCAC) capitalized in the rebounding department, holding a 47-31 advantage in a stat Wooster usually finishes sizably ahead on. Additionally, Wooster shot just 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the floor.
First-year
Tommy Vaughn Jr. provided a big spark for Wooster during the guard's first stretch of action on Saturday. Vaughn Jr. knocked down an open triple to give Wooster a 15-14 lead with 11:51 remaining in the first half. DePauw's defense doubled senior
Jaiden Cox-Holloway down low, and the Scots' forward was able to work the ball outside for the first of three assists in the game.
Less than two minutes later, Vaughn Jr. hit again from range, this time utilizing a screen to get enough open space to fire off the 3-pointer. Next, senior
Isaiah Johnson jumped the passing late for his second of three steals, and the guard capped the fast break with a dunk that made it 24-18. Junior
Quincy Jones forced up one of his signature 7-foot floaters through traffic to give Wooster a 26-18 advantage for the team's largest lead of the game. A 10-0 DePauw charge helped the Tigers to a 39-32 halftime lead.
Senior
Isaac Roeder's 3-pointer pulled Wooster within 44-40 with 16:42 left in Saturday's contest. The triple capped the Scots' 8-2 stretch that started with Vaughn Jr.'s third 3-pointer of the day. Cox-Holloway added a turnaround jumper high off the glass during the run and took a charge prior to Vaughn Jr.'s 3-pointer.
Cox-Holloway and Jones scored 13 points apiece to lead Wooster. Vaughn Jr.'s 11 points marked a new collegiate-best. Cox-Holloway accounted for almost half of Wooster's 31 rebounds with 13. The senior now has five games with at least 10 rebounds this winter.
Wooster went 14-of-17 at the charity stripe and totaled 24 points from its bench.
Sam Jacobs led all players with 17 points.
Brady Kunka and
Joe Smith followed with 15.
Reph Stevenson secured 11 rebounds for DePauw.
The Tigers shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the floor and were just 14-of-23 at the line. DePauw scored 42 of its 63 field-goal points in the paint.
Next, Wooster hosts first-year NCAC member John Carroll University (5-1, 0-1 NCAC) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
