Two of the Great Lakes-turned-Region VII powerhouse programs over the last three decades are now conference rivals, and John Carroll University took the first game from The College of Wooster men's basketball team as a North Coast Athletic Conference institution 92-73 on Wednesday evening at Timken Gymnasium.
Wooster (3-6, 1-2 NCAC) continued to be led by senior
Jaiden Cox-Holloway, who posted his third straight and sixth double-double of the season. Cox-Holloway scored a team-high 18 points and secured a game-high 14 rebounds, which matched his season-high.
Junior
Quincy Jones followed with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting. The forwards were joined in double figures in the scoring column by senior
EJ Kapihe (12 points), first-year
Tommy Vaughn Jr. (12 points), and senior
Isaac Roeder (10 points). Roeder turned in his first collegiate double-double with a career-high 11 rebounds, and Vaughn Jr. upped his collegiate-best in the scoring department for the second straight game.
John Carroll's (6-2, 1-2 NCAC) strong press was ultimately Wooster's downfall, as the Fighting Scots turned the ball over 29 times. The Blue Streaks turned the miscues into 32 points and were led by six steals from
Brandon Rose and five from All-America
Luke Chicone.
Chicone was John Carroll's leading scorer with 21 points. He passed out nine assists.
Jack Zapolnik dropped in 13 points off the bench on 5-of-9 shooting, which was led by a 3-of-6 ledger from beyond the arc.
Sean Collins' seven rebounds led John Carroll's side of the stat sheet.
Wooster's best stretch was a 9-0 run that pulled the Scots within 18-17 with 10:27 to play in the first half. Jones' floater in the paint trimmed the Scots' deficit to 18-12 at 11:21, then sophomore
Breckman Oakley found Cox-Holloway open for a 3-pointer.
Next, Roeder poked the ball away from John Carroll's
Kyle Irwin prior to Kapihe finding Cox-Holloway for the layup that made it 21-17.
John Carroll answered with a 5-0 stretch and maintained a multi-possession lead the rest of the night.
Wooster shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field and had 43 rebounds to John Carroll's 37. However, the Blue Streaks doubled up the Scots 16-8 on second-chance points.
John Carroll shot 41.3 percent (33-of-80) for the game.
Next, Wooster is at Transylvania University (4-4) for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, Dec. 20.
