Game Recap: Softball |

Lodge Delivers Senior Day Heroics

With the game on the line in the bottom of the seventh, The College of Wooster softball team's lone senior Sarah Lodge laced the first pitch she saw to right field to give Wooster the 4-3 walk off win over the University of Mount Union on Sunday.

It was a fitting end to senior day, and it gave the Scots the spilt after falling 2-1 in game one.

After trailing 3-1 with three outs remaining, Lodge proved to be the hero to cap off a three-run seventh inning.

The one out rally started with a single from sophomore Brenna Haydu. Then an error and a walk later loaded the bases with for junior Julia Jennings, who delivered with a single down the right field line to make it 3-2.

First-year Jillian Meszaros came up to the plate next and hit a grounder to short. That resulted in some contact between the runner on second and the shortstop, which led to an errant throw to first.

After some discussion between the umpires, that play stood, and it tied the game at 3-3 to set the stage for Lodge's walk off.

Sophomore Tori Conner got the much-deserved win, pitching the complete game, allowing just four hits and two earned runs.

Wooster collected six hits, led by a 2-for-2 day from Haydu.

In game one, Mount Union (14-10) scored in the first inning off Meszaros as a leadoff walk came around to score to make it a 1-0 game.

Wooster answered in the third with an RBI single from Jennings.

Yet, Mount scored what would be the winning run in the fifth as the leadoff batter reached via an infield error. She was later brought home on a two-out single by Kendyll Cahill.

Wooster attempted its first one-out rally in the seventh when Katie Mommers drew a walk, which stopped a streak of 11 straight batters retired by the Purple Raiders' pitching staff.

Shelby Ellsworth followed by drawing another walk, but a pair of infield grounders ended the game.

Mount Union's Chloe Bird improved to 4-0, pitching the final four frames without allowing a hit. Wooster's offense collected just four hits.

Meszaros took another tough loss, pitching a complete game and allowing just one earned run.

Wooster (8-18) will return to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when they host Ohio Wesleyan University in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
