GAMBIER – The College of Wooster softball team picked up its first North Coast Athletic Conference sweep of the season on Sunday, defeating Kenyon College 2-0 in game one and scoring a season-high in runs with a 15-1 win in five innings in game two.
In game one, first-year Jillian Meszaros pitched a two-hitter and threw a career-high seven strikeouts after match a season-high of six on Saturday.
Kenyon did not record a hit until the fourth inning and didn't threaten to score until the sixth. That's when Kenyon failed a squeeze play and catcher Cate Barkdoll picked off a runner at third who was caught between home and third.
Meszaros then put Kenyon down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
Offensively, Barkdoll gave Wooster its first run in the third with a double to right field, which scored Meszaros. In the fourth, it was first-year Sage Lammlein scoring Lynx Lander on a single to right field.
Lander, along with Julia Jennings, each had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. The team collected eight hits in the game off Kenyon starter Kylie Hamm.
Game two was a different story for the Scots' offense, which exploded for 13 hits.
After a scoreless first inning, they put up a six-spot in the second and later, four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth.
Junior Lynnsey Delio was a huge part of that, falling a triple shy of the cycle and going 3-for-4 at the plate. Delio doubled in the second to give Wooster its first run and later hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to make it 10-1.
Classmate Ella Wolff also had a 3-for-4 game with two RBI and two runs scored.
Wooster benefited early from being patient at the plate as Emma Hetkey, Jennings and Barkdoll all drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Hetkey would later score on a wild pitch and Jennings would score Wooster's last run oof the inning on a single from Lander, making it 6-0.
Lander started the scoring in the fourth on an RBI double. She had another multi-hit game, batting 2-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Sarah Lodge also collected two hits and scored two runs.
Barkdoll had one hit but tied Delio with a game-high three RBI. Lammlein capped off scoring with a two-run double.
First-year Kaitlyn Hale got her first start and pitched a two-hitter with her only blemish being a solo home run in the second. She struck out one.
Kenyon drops to 18-14 overall and 3-9 in the NCAC. Wooster moves to 14-20 and 4-8 ni conference play.
Next, Wooster hosts Ohio Northern University in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
