The College of Wooster softball team split in non-conference action with Ohio Northern University on Wednesday with a 3-2 win in game one and a 5-3 loss in game two.
In game one, first-year Jillian Meszaros threw another gem of a game, allowing two earned runs across seven innings and striking out four. Her counterpart, Taylor Keck, gave up three earned runs on 10 hits.
Wooster's first run came in the bottom of the second inning via a sacrifice fly to center field from Sage Lammelein, which scored classmate Lynx Lander.
The Scots put two more on the board in the third to go up 3-0. Senior Sarah Lodge singled to right to score Cate Barkdoll. Later, Lodge scored off a single to right center from Lander.
Ohio Northern scored both of their runs in the fourth in a three-hit inning. Ashley Lenser hit a solo home run to left field before Lillie Marker singled home another run.
Meszaros locked down in the final three frames, allowing just one hit the rest of the way.
Lander and Madi Yankauskas each went 2-for-3 to lead the Scots. Six others recorded a hit.
In game two, Wooster could not get enough done offensively to back first-year starter Kaitlyn Hale. Hale went the distance, giving up five runs across 12 hits.
The Polar Bears got to the first-year in the later innings, starting with a two-run fifth that tied the game at three.
Ohio Northern then scored a run in each the sixth and seventh innings, both times off RBI doubles to left-center field.
Ohio Northern started their No. 3 pitcher, Avery Neth, who pitched the first three innings, before turning to their No. 1 in Ashley Lenser.
Lenser came in with her team trailing 3-1 and pitched the final four frames to collect her 14th win of the season. She gave up just one earned run and four hits.
Barkdoll tied the game in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to right field. Junior Julia Jennings then brought home a run in the third and fourth innings with a pair of singles.
Jennings finished 2-for-4 along with Emma Hetkey. Lammelein also had a two-hit performance, going 2-for-3.
Ohio Northern moves to 18-20 overall, while Wooster moves to 15-21.
Next, the Scots will play their final regular season North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader when they travel to Oberlin College on Saturday.
