The College of Wooster men's soccer team opened its season at home on Friday, holding off Waynesburg University in a 3-2 victory.
The men did all its damage in a 10-minute span in the first half, taking momentum from each goal to lead 3-0 after the first half.
Starting it all in the 25th minute, came off the left foot of junior
Aris Christodoulou, who was in the right of the box and found the left side of the net for Wooster's first goal of the season. It came off an assist from sophomore
Connor Shea.
A minute later, junior
Robert Hillhouse with the move from atop the box to beat his defender made it a 2-0 game.
Finally, in the 33rd minute, senior
Evan Amend deserves plenty of the credit, swiping the ball from the Waynesburg keeper and finding
Aiden Faber atop the box. The first-year showed no fear, connecting for his first score as a Fighting Scot.
Wooster was well in control for two-thirds of the game, until Waynesburg was given a penalty kick in the 75th minute, which was connected on by
John Engel.
Waynesburg kept its pressure on the Scots and found the back of the net again in the 82nd minute as Engel found
Wayne Johnson on the score.
The final minutes was highly competitive, but Wooster's ability to play keep away ultimately sealed the game.
Wooster outshot Waynesburg 16-9, while each team took four corner kicks. Sophomore
Eddie Glucksman received his first collegiate win in net, making one save in the process.
This was both teams' first game of the season. Wooster returns to action Sunday when they host Trine University at 4 p.m.
