Wooster Breaks Record on Opening Day

Fighting Scots serve up 21 aces in Friday win

The College of Wooster volleyball team served up a record 21 aces in Friday's 21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 27-25 win over Worcester State University at Cedar Point's Sports Center in Sandusky, Ohio.

Wooster's (1-1) 21 aces were one better than the 20 the Fighting Scots had against the University of Akron Wayne College in a 2015 match. Senior Izzy Cozzie, playing near her hometown of Huron, Ohio, served up the record-breaking 21st ace on match point. A few plays earlier, first-year Kennedy Muhlenkamp's fourth ace of the match tied the team's single-match program record.

Muhlenkamp was one of four Scots with at least a trio of aces in the Worcester State win. First-year Erin Ellis led the team with six, and was followed by Cozzie, who matched Muhlenkamp with four. Sophomore Catherine Muzilla added three.

Wooster's aggressive serving led to Worcester State having a 74.7 serve receive percentage on the night.

Offensively, first-year Tamarra Talbert paced the attack with 13 kills. Cozzie followed with nine, while junior Jordan Laraway stuffed the stat sheet with eight. Defensively, Muzilla tallied 25 digs from the libero position, Muhlenkamp had a double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs.

Ellis kept the offense moving efficiently with 26 assists. Over one-third of sets from both Ellis and Muhlenkamp led to kills for Wooster, which hit .174 in the Worcester State match.

Worcester State (0-2) was led by Beatrice Gamboa-Estrella's 11 kills and seven digs, and a team-leading 18 digs by Katherine Crateau.

Earlier, Wooster opened its season with a 25-23, 25-11, 25-27, 25-17 loss to North Park University (1-0). Ellis' collegiate career started with five aces.

Elsewhere, a balanced attack saw four players have at least four kills. Cozzie and Laraway had six apiece. Muzilla totaled 24 digs from the libero position. Laraway accounted for 10 of Wooster's other 29 digs. Talbert was credited with three solo blocks.

North Park's Annaliese Rottman had the hot hand all match, totaling 22 kills on 52 swings with just five errors.

Wooster plays two more matches at this year's Great Lakes Crossover on Saturday. The Scots open with a 10 a.m. match against Alma College before wrapping the weekend up with a noon contest against Mount Saint Joseph University.
