The College of Wooster field hockey team found its offensive rhythm in Sunday's dominant 4-0 win over Transylvania University, which opened North Coast Athletic Conference play for the Fighting Scots.
Senior
Lizzie Hardy scored twice in the first 19 minutes, first on a penalty corner, then on a rebound. Wooster made quick work of its second penalty corner of the game, as senior
Natalie Katzenmeyer inserted to the top to Hardy, who immediately fired in her first goal of the year from just inside the circle. Wooster had a barrage of shots in the 19th minute before Hardy cleaned up on the rebound goal.
Just over 10 minutes later, Wooster again had the cage surrounded following a Katzenmeyer penalty corner insert. After Transylvania (0-5, 0-1 NCAC) goalie
Peyton Steinriede denied Wooster twice, Katzenmeyer tapped in the rebound for the senior's first score of the season.
In the third quarter, sophomore
Frankie Zehnal created enough space within the Pioneers' defense to get a shot off from the wing. The laser-quick goal was the sophomore's second of the year.
Wooster kept the pressure up all game long and dominated possession for a majority of the NCAC clash. That equated to a 31-5 advantage in shots, and a 10-1 count in corners.
Steinriede's play in goal for Transylvania was notable, as the 'keeper finished with 12 saves on the day. Wooster senior
Cate Barkdoll and junior
Noa Kauffman each played a half in goal. Kauffman finished with three saves. The junior was up to the task of preserving the shutout in the 39th minute when numerous Pioneers converged on the cage. Back-to-back shots were denied by Kauffman before Wooster cleared the ball.
Next, Wooster hosts Oberlin College (3-1, 1-0 NCAC) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 as part of Homecoming for Alumni and Families Weekend.
