Senior
Lizzie Hardy shot in a loose ball from about seven yards out with 8:10 remaining in regulation to lift The College of Wooster field hockey team to a 2-1 win over visiting Oberlin College on Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium.
Wooster (2-2, 2-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) sophomore
Frankie Zehnal's drive was stopped by a swarm of Oberlin (3-3, 1-2 NCAC) defenders, resulting in the Yeowomen deflecting the ball towards the top of the circle. An open Hardy drove the shot in for her third goal of the year.
A penalty corner just before the clock was inside a minute to go in the first half was when Wooster struck first. Senior
Natalie Katzenmeyer inserted, and the ball was played to the middle, where the Scots had the cage surrounded. Junior
Brooke Benjamin deflected the ball to the far post, where senior
Coco Rodríguez was waiting for the tap-in score.
Oberlin's third-period penalty corner resulted in the score getting tied at one.
Elly Scheer inserted to the deep wing, where
Shelby Roth connected from just inside the circle.
Late in the fourth, junior
Melinda Lazenby cleared out a ball in the critical scoring area to break up a developing Oberlin scoring chance. The Yeowomen had the numbers advantage inside the circle prior to Lazenby's clear.
Oberlin also threatened inside the final five minutes of the game.
Mary Rodman's try at a game-tying goal was turned aside by senior
Cate Barkdoll for the 'keeper's fifth save of the contest.
Wooster nearly took a two-goal lead in the closing seconds. First-year
Izzie Kline nearly scored for the first time, directing a cross that went off the post.
Oberlin finished with an 11-10 shot advantage, and penalty corners were even at four each way. Barkdoll's five saves were three more than Oberlin's
Janny McCormick.
Next, Wooster concludes its five-game homestand with Tuesday's 4:30 p.m. game against Denison University (2-5, 1-0 NCAC).
