Benjamin Scores in Loss

Denison beats Wooster 6-1

Junior Brooke Benjamin provided a spark for The College of Wooster field hockey team, tying Tuesday's game at one, but Denison University took charge from there in an eventual 6-1 win at John P. Papp Stadium.

A Wooster cross from senior Lizzie Hardy was broken up by a Denison defender's stick, but the ricochet went right to Benjamin. The junior scored for the first time this season with 4:00 remaining in the first quarter. It marked Benjamin's second collegiate goal, and the junior is now tied for second on the team with four points this fall.

Emma Gebhart stole the spotlight, scoring five unanswered goals for Div. III's third five-goal game this fall. She made it 3-1 in the final minute of the first half by dribbling past a Wooster defender and shooting. Two tap ins and a rebound goal were added to Gebhart's line in the second half.

Wooster's goalkeepers made 18 saves on the day, with 12 by senior Cate Barkdoll and six by junior Noa Kauffman. Prior to Benjamin's goal, Barkdoll had a key block on a shot from Denison that was just outside the circle, but close enough to the line to not chance stopping. Nine of Barkdoll's saves came in the opening half.

Hardy, this week's North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, had her breakaway chance stopped by Denison's Therese Lucian in the final minute of the game. The Fighting Scots were then awarded a penalty corner, with junior Melinda Lazenby's try at a second goal for Wooster turned away.

Denison outshot Wooster 35-5 en route to improving to 3-5, with a 2-0 mark in conference play. Wooster dropped to 2-3, 2-1 NCAC.

Wooster is at Ohio Wesleyan University (3-4, 2-0 NCAC) for a noon game on Saturday, Sept. 27. It will mark the program's first road contest of the year.
