The College of Wooster field hockey team fell 4-0 to defending North Coast Athletic Conference champion Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at historic Selby Stadium.
Ohio Wesleyan's (4-4, 3-0 NCAC)
Mary Powers put the Battling Bishops on the board in the 10th minute.
Emma Wright's drive drew in a helping Fighting Scot defender, enabling Powers to cut into open space to receive a pass leading to the opening goal.
Brogan Heilig made it 2-0 in the 25th minute after receiving a penalty corner insert from
Emma Reynolds. Heilig fired in a shot from just inside the top of the circle. Heilig added a second goal to cap the day's scoring with six minutes remaining in the contest. Her initial shot was stopped by Wooster (2-4, 2-2 NCAC) senior
Cate Barkdoll, but Heilig was able to tuck the rebound in around the Scots' goalkeeper.
Wright received a pass in the middle from
Alyssa Markell in the 37th minute. Wright paused momentarily, turned, and fired the Battling Bishops' third goal into the lower left corner of the cage.
Senior
Lizzie Hardy deflected the ball away from an Ohio Wesleyan midfielder in the opening minute. Sophomore
Frankie Zehnal tracked down possession and worked the ball inside the circle for the first scoring chance for either side in the game. Zehnal's shot was stopped by Ohio Wesleyan's
Payton Mindel.
Junior
Brooke Benjamin nearly tucked away a shot above Mindel with just over four minutes remaining in the contest, but the Bishops' goalkeeper's jumping save denied Wooster a score. Mindel was just as quick to deny
Addison Fletcher, who immediately sent the rebound low from right in front of the cage.
Ohio Wesleyan was credited with 51 shots to Wooster's seven. Barkdoll made 15 saves to surpass 50 on the season.
Next, Wooster hosts Wittenberg University (0-6, 0-1 NCAC) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4.
