Wenz Wooster’s Greatest Scorer

Alumna earned All-America honors

Kymberly (Wenz) Warren ended her career as an All-American at the very place where she learned the skills and drills necessary to succeed at that level.

"I attended summer camps held at the College," reflected Wenz. "Playing at Wooster was a humbling and fulfilling adventure because I got to continue playing the sport I love while obtaining a great education at a college not too far from my hometown."

Attending Avon Lake High School, approximately an hour from Wooster, enabled head coach Lisa Campanell Komara the opportunity to come to games. Her great interest in the standout guard, plus the campus atmosphere upon visiting, won Wenz over. She made an immediate impact, earning North Coast Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and honorable mention all-conference status after ranking seventh in the league as a first-year with 11.8 points per game. As a sophomore, she was well on her way to postseason laurels before suffering a season-ending injury against Denison University. Still, Wenz led the NCAC in scoring at 17.5 points per game, ranked eighth in rebounding with 6.8 per night, and developed into an elite three-point shooter, making 52.3 percent (23-of-44) of her tries from beyond the arc.

Wenz returned stronger and more determined, elevating her play to an all-region level as a junior. The program's second all-region honoree earned first-team all-conference status after averaging a career-best 18.6 points per game, which led the conference and was 33rd nationally. She led the NCAC with 2.5 steals per game and scored at least 20 points 14 times.

As a senior, Wenz's career culminated with honorable mention Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-America honors and a coveted spot as a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy. She finished 14th in the nation in scoring at 20.8 points, the second-highest season average in team history. She led the NCAC in scoring for the third time, made a school-record 72 three-pointers, and was second nationally with a 47.4 three-point percentage.

Wenz scored 1,558 career points, a record 541 of which came as a senior. Her 17.1 per-game average still sits at the top of the program's records, and she went 167-of-402 on three-pointers, for a program-record 41.5 percent make rate.

"Kymberly was such an amazing student-athlete," shared Campanell Komara. "She spent much of her career getting double teamed, yet would still score 20 points because of her sheer determination and hustle. She brought a focus and intensity to each practice and led by her actions on and off the court. In my 28 years of coaching women's basketball, she had the quickest release for getting a good shot off. Spectators in the stands were in amazement of her ability to be in the right spot for every play on both offense and defense."

Wenz graduated with a degree in communication studies and is the project manager at Hall Industries, which makes and sells aviation equipment to airports all over the world. She is married to Dr. John Warren '09, an All-NCAC baseball player. They reside in New Castle, Pennsylvania, with their children, Audrey, John III, and James.
