Acker, Ahmann continue to lead Scots

First-year Lauren Acker and senior Joe Ahmann continued to lead The College of Wooster cross country team, which competed at Friday's All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Challenge held at Cedarville University's Elvin R. King Cross Country Course. Wooster's women placed eighth among the scoring NCAA Div. III teams, while the men were 10th.

Acker was 29th among Div. III finishers, crossing in 24:01.2. Junior Reeve Helvoigt was next for Wooster's women, with the time of 26:11.2 ranking in the top-75. Sophomore Eilidh Horn went 26:38.6 for 82nd, while junior Elise Wheeler was about a minute back of Horn at 27:35.7, which ranked 99th among Div. III harriers.

Senior Sylvia Direnzo's 28:41.4 ranked 108th and rounded out the Fighting Scots' scorers. Wooster's women's top-seven was rounded out by junior Naomi Kaczor (29:10.5, 114th) and junior Colette Christopher (32:29.0, 127th).

Ahmann posted his second straight top championship-length time, with Friday's being a collegiate-best by over 45 seconds. The senior was the 38th-place finisher among Div. III entries, stopping the clock at 26:58.3.

Sophomore Basil Keck was next, taking 66th at 27:47.8. Just over a minute later was sophomore Grant Mentzer, who had a time of 28:54.2. Senior Jack Schuller went 29:15.3 to finish as Wooster's No. 4 on the night. Schuller was 112th.

Junior Nick Schade was right behind Schuller, with a 114th-place time of 29:16.3. Senior Reese Johnson and classmate Charlie Cuttino were part of Wooster's tight pack of harriers, as the duo gave the team four finishers within five seconds of each other.

Otterbein University topped the men's Div. III standings, while John Carroll University's Sam Su was the individual Div. III champion with a time of 25:10.0. On the women's side, John Carroll edged out Ohio Wesleyan University by three points for the team crown. Kenyon College's Anna Brown went 22:11.3 to break the tape individually.

Next, Wooster competes at Muskingum University's Daniel Mullen Memorial Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4.
