Wooster Off to Oberlin Saturday

Kickoff at noon

The College of Wooster (1-2, 0-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) football team is back on the road this week to play Oberlin College (0-3, 0-1 NCAC) at noon on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex. Wooster is coming off a 34-7 loss to Wabash College (3-0, 1-0 NCAC) on Saturday, while Oberlin (0-3, 0-1 NCAC) dropped a 63-0 game at John Carroll University (2-1, 1-0) on Saturday.

On The Air: Oberlin will produce a webcast of this Saturday's football game and it can be viewed at https://northcoastnetwork.com/oberlin.

All-Time Series: Wooster leads the all-time series 75-23-2 and has won eight straight. Wooster has beaten Oberlin more than any other opponent in program history, and the Fighting Scots have played the Yeomen more times than any other team. Kenyon College is No. 2 all-time on Wooster's wins list at 57, while Denison University is second for most all-time meetings in program history at 92. The Wooster-Oberlin series dates back to 1903. The Yeomen won that game 30-0. Wooster is 32-4 in the series since the NCAC was founded.

Last Meeting: Wooster ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown for the second time in 2024, and the Scots logged five sacks in an Oct. 26 46-21 win at Oberlin. Alumnus Brazos Gadler was the returner on the opening kickoff, running it back 85 yards. Gadler patiently worked the ball from the right side of the field to the left, made the last Oberlin defender miss, then was off to the races down the left sideline. Earlier in 2024, Carter Warstler ran the opening kickoff the year back 90 yards for a touchdown against Wilmington College. At the time, Wooster was the seventh team in Div. III with two kickoff return touchdowns in 2024. Gadler erupted for 248 all-purpose yards in the win.

Offense Notes: Junior Michael Boyle (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) continues to rank highly within NCAA Div. III in several statistical categories. He is 13th nationally with 896 passing yards, 13th nationally with nine passing touchdowns, and 37th with 18 points per game responsible for. Wooster has three different receivers with a 100-yard game on the season. Senior Tate Journell (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) has two with 177 yards on nine receptions at Wilmington in the season opener and 109 yards on seven receptions in Wooster's 28-14 win over Saint Vincent College on Sept. 14. Senior Jordan Lewis (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) went for 150 yards on seven receptions against St. Vincent. Sophomore Cam Crago (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) became the latest 100-yard receiving Scot with 107 yards on six receptions against Wabash.

Defense Notes: Through three games, senior defensive back Brock Sivon (Perry, Ohio/Perry) leads the team with 29 tackles. He is followed by senior linebacker Braydon Hudson (North Liberty, Ind./Washington) who has 23. Senior Paul Ehenger (Salem, Ore./South Salem), who was the NCAC Defensive Athlete of the Week following the win over St. Vincent, is second in the NCAC with three sacks. Junior linebacker Christian Kring (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon Washington) is right behind Ehenger for the team lead in sacks with two.

Special Teams Notes: First-year Nolan Hendricks (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon Washington) upped his season average in punting to 34.2 and now has a long of 46 yards on the year. Hendricks is averaging 55 yards per kickoff.

This and That: Wooster director of strength and conditioning and manager of Williams Fitness and Swigart Strength Centers Carson Kinney spent last fall as an assistant coach with Oberlin's football team. Wooster is looking to win its September finale for just the third time since 2014. Wooster beat Hiram College 39-24 in its 2024 September finale and Kenyon 70-21 in its 2023 September finale. Wooster has scored at least 35 points in three straight games against Oberlin.
