Tate Journell is one of the 177 semifinalists for the 2025 William V. Campbell Trophy. The National Football Foundation made the announcement of the semifinalists on Wednesday.
Journell's senior season is off to a great start. He is tops on Wooster's team with 19 receptions, 320 yards, and four touchdowns. He has two 100-yard receiving games on the year. Journell opened the season with 177 yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions against Wilmington College and followed that up with 109 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches in Wooster's win over Saint Vincent College.
Defensively, Journell has resumed his two-way role, playing corner in key situations. He had an interception against St. Vincent and has four tackles and a pass breakup on the year.
Journell missed most of his junior season due to injury. As a sophomore, he was a second-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection as a corner. He ranked second in the NCAC with four interceptions in 2023, which marked the program's highest total in a decade. Journell was third on the team with 377 receiving yards and 21 receptions and ranked second with six receiving touchdowns. As a sophomore, Journell was a two-time NCAC Athlete of the Week.
Academically, Journell is a communication studies major. He is a two-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Dean's List. He officiates youth basketball games in the Wooster community and helps maintain Memorial Park, used by Dundas Baseball Association in the summers.
The NFF will announce 12-16 finalists on Oct. 22. Each finalist will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2025 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments. One of the finalists will be named the winner of the Campbell Trophy on Dec. 9 and have his scholarship increased to $25,000.
