The College of Wooster volleyball team carried over the momentum from its midweek reverse-sweep victory to set one of Friday's opener, but ultimately fell 20-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-22 to Grove City College and 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 to Adrian College at Oberlin College's Philips Gymnasium.
Serving was where Wooster stood out in its set-one win against Grove City, as the Fighting Scots fired off six aces in the frame. Three of them came consecutively from junior
Natalie Hohman, who led Wooster on a 7-0 run. Wooster trailed 13-8 when first-year
Ireland Oswick's kill sent Hohman to the service line. Two Grove City attack errors followed Hohman's trio of aces, and those helped put the Scots up 15-13.
Later in the set, Wooster utilized a 5-0 run with senior
Izzy Cozzie at the service line to take the lead for good. A kill from junior
Kora Burill tied the set at 19. Cozzie had the team's fifth ace of the frame that made it 23-19. Three rallies later, sophomore
Addie Gardner capped the frame with an ace.
Wooster served up 11 aces against Grove City, with Hohman adding a fourth later in the non-conference clash. Wooster's 27 kills came in large part from Cozzie and Oswick, who combined for 12. While playing in her hometown, sophomore
Catherine Muzilla followed up her first 30-dig match with 17 to lead the Scots. Oswick added a team-leading three blocks to her co-team-high six kills.
Grove City rode the attack of
Sarah Hart and
Alayna Dorst to the victory. They combined for 33 kills on 68 swings with just eight errors. Dorst and Hart helped Grove City to a .290 attack percentage for the afternoon.
Cozzie's double-double led Wooster in the nightcap against Adrian. She posted team-highs in digs and kills with 12 and 10, respectively. Cozzie emerged as Wooster's big producer in set three in particular, posting seven in-play receptions, six digs, and four kills on nine error-free swings in the frame.
Muzilla joined Cozzie with double-digit digs at 10.
Megan Feldmann had 11 kills to lead Adrian, which showcased a balanced effort across the rest of the stat board. The Bulldogs had 13 aces with no individual serving up more than three. Adrian's aces were the difference in securing the sweep, with six of them coming in set three.
Wooster fell to 2-5 on the season. Grove City ran its record to 4-0 against Wooster, while Adrian improved to 1-4.
Next, Wooster hosts the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic, Sept. 12-13. Wooster's Friday matches feature the Scots taking on the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (0-4) at 3 p.m. and Hiran College (2-1) at 7 p.m. at Timken Gymnasium.
