Zehnal Scores for Scots

Sophomore nets fifth collegiate goal

Sophomore Frankie Zehnal scored The College of Wooster field hockey team's first goal of the season in Saturday's 4-1 loss against Marian University at John P. Papp Stadium.

Zehnal's fifth collegiate goal came in the 17th minute and pulled the Fighting Scots within 3-1. A loose ball on Marian's side of the field was possessed by junior Brooke Benjamin, who fed the ball forward to Zehnal. Zehnal created separation from a Marian defender and fired a laser-quick back-hander into the cage.

Wooster could not overcome three first-quarter Marian goals that came in a span of 4:19. Allyson Nichols beat Wooster's defense with a one-on-goalie chance in the fourth minute. Just over two minutes later, Marian's Shaelyn Klassen tipped in a show from Charlotte Touw from the wing. On the third goal, Jikke Biemans fired in a shot from the nearside post area of the field.

The Sabres' fourth goal was scored by Clara Guivernau Ragg, who finished through traffic in the 34th minute.

Wooster had plenty of offensive chances, earning 11 penalty corners for the game. The Scots had one at the end of the first stanza, where Wooster had two good looks. First, senior Lizzie Hardy's shot was blocked, then Benjamin looked to target the open far corner on the rebound before that shot sailed wide.

In the third, Zehnal looked to drive to the cage in a one-on-one matchup with a Marian defender closely contesting the entire way. That resulted in a wide shot from just in front of the post.

Marian, which outshot Wooster 18-10, dominated the fourth with 11 shots in the stanza. Wooster's defense held, with senior Cate Barkdoll logging four of a game-high seven saves. Senior Joey Beckerman had a defensive save in support of the Scots' starter in the 54th minute.

Wooster fell to 0-2. Marian upped its record to 2-0.

Next, Wooster opens North Coast Athletic Conference play against affiliate member Transylvania University (0-2) on Sunday, Sept. 14. Start time at John P. Papp Stadium is set for noon.
