Senior Salute - Kaleel Manderson

Manderson is a member of track and field team

Throughout the spring semester we are celebrating our senior student-athletes with a Senior Salute series. Today's featured senior is track and field's Khaleel Manderson. Manderson is a computer science major.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose Wooster for the Posse scholarship. The concept of a smaller community was enticing.

Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: Being a Fighting Scot means you have the potential to be great if you trust the process.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: Some of my favorite memories are the eclipse day, Aux Cord Wars live musical game show, and the Black Student Association Showcase.

Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part is meeting different people and teams across Div. III.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am involved with the Wooster Activities Crew and the Black Student Association. I am a Posse Scholar and a resident assistant.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Dr. Beatrice Adams was a great person to speak with and interact with during my times with the Black Student Association. Dr. Adams is a very thoughtful and kind person to me.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: Professor Kerstin Vaughn provided me with a look into a field I did not think I fit in, but over time, I have grown to love my time in her classes. Dr. John Musgrave has been a great person to talk with. I never have a dull moment in conversations with him. Dr. Dan Palmer truly has been a great help to me. Without him, I would not have been able to complete my major the way I did.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: I plan to go into animation and game design in the future, so my Independent Study helps with the development of that desire and passion. My I.S. involves not only the process of testing multiple animation and designing software, but also the usability and ease of use of each. I am creating short tutorial-based videos providing a small introduction to each software I am researching. I am then conducting tests on individuals across different fields of study, including computer science, art majors, and those who do not have any correlation into either, then comparing the results.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: I believe my time with the Black Student Association has been a fun experience and led to me feeling closer to the Black community on campus. I am also a Posse Scholar. I have had the pleasure of going to events provided by the Posse Foundation and the College's prior collaboration.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: You are here to have an experience. At the end of the day things can go bad, but things can also go really good too. Trust in yourself and things will work out. Doubt breeds fear and fear leads to regretful mistakes.
