GRANVILLE -- The College of Wooster men's tennis team started 2026 with a challenge, traveling to Mitchell Fieldhouse to take on North Coast Athletic Conference foe Dension University on Saturday.
Denison (1-0), who starts the season ranked first in the ITA Division III men's collegiate rankings, defeated the Scots, 7-0.
Wooster (1-1) hung with Denison in doubles play, capturing four games in both the No. 1 and No. 3 flight. Junior
Anthony VanOyen teamed with first-year
Enzo Lopes in the top flight, while first-year
Andrew Wissman and senior
Walker Wood took four games in the No. 3 match.
At the No. 2 flight, junior
Bennett Dickerson and sophomore
Ian Royse fell to a 6-1 score.
In singles play, both VanOyen and Lopes continued to find ways to win games. VanOyen fell to
Kael Shalin, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 1 flight, while Lopes fell 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 flight.
Royse also had a fair showing in the No. 2 flight with a 6-2, 6-1 loss to
Anthony Payiavlas. At the No. 4 flight, Dickerson was unable to capture a game with a 6-0, 6-0 loss.
Finally, Wissman was able to take a couple games late in the No. 5 flight but ultimately fell 6-0, 6-2. Wood did the same but captured a game in the first set in a 6-1, 6-2 loss.
Next, the Scots will have their first match of the year inside Aspen Racquet Club when they host the University of Mount Union on Sunday.
