Junior
Frankie Zehnal scored her team-leading seventh goal of the year in The College of Wooster field hockey team's 4-1 loss at John Carroll University on Saturday afternoon.
Wooster's top forward is now one goal shy of doubling her career total heading into the 2026 season. Her seventh goal of junior year came in the 33rd minute. A clear by John Carroll resulted in a foul for the ball hitting the foot of a Blue Streak player. Senior
Brooke Benjamin countered immediately, passing ahead to Zehnal in space. Zehnal moved around the last Blue Streak defender and shot in the goal from the right wing.
John Carroll's first goal came in the fifth minute. The initial shot from
Francesca Rao was saved by Wooster senior
Nono Kauffman, but
Kierra Maxie tucked home the rebound. It was 2-0 just before the end of the first, as
Mia Curtis cut in from the end line after inserting a penalty corner and knocked in the ball from a shot that originated from the top from
Miako Dallas.
Rao found the scoring column just over a minute into the second. A foul deep on Wooster's end enabled John Carroll to move quickly upon the restart in a development similar to the Benjamin-to-Zehnal score. Good timing in transition from the Blue Streaks led to the fourth goal from
Sophia Schultheis about two minutes later.
Wooster nearly halved its deficit following Zehnal's goal, as the Scots found their offensive footing in the second half. A penalty corner ended in a shot from senior
Audrey McKenna that was saved by John Carroll's
Ava Bunce. Senior
Melinda Lazenby's try at halving the deficit seconds later hit off the post, and a Benjamin try at a second goal for Wooster was denied by
Morgan Payne.
The four-shot barrage at the start of the second half helped Wooster even out the post-halftime stat sheet. John Carroll did not allow a Wooster shot in the first half while having 11 on its side of the game ledger. Post halftime, shots were more even at 9-7, slightly favoring John Carroll. The Blue Streaks finished with an 11-3 edge in corners.
Kauffman made 11 saves for a fifth game with double-digit stops this fall.
John Carroll is now 4-7 in its inaugural season of field hockey and evened its North Coast Athletic Conference record to 3-3. Wooster fell to 3-7 and 2-4 within the conference.
Next, Wooster hosts NCAC-leading DePauw University (8-2, 6-0 NCAC) on Saturday, October 17. Start time from John P. Papp Stadium is at noon.
