The College of Wooster field hockey team fought hard to get a late equalizer against North Coast Athletic Conference front-running DePauw University, but the Fighting Scots were denied the game-tying score in Saturday's 1-0 loss at John P. Papp Stadium
Wooster hung tough, even with a 31-7 disparity in shots, and won the fourth quarter, outshooting DePauw 5-2 in the final stanza. Junior
Frankie Zehnal had the best look at the tying goal, firing a backhander towards the far post midway through the final stanza. DePauw's
Olivia Streifel lunged just far enough to get the leg pad on the ball for one of her four fourth-quarter saves.
Zehnal had three of Wooster's four on-target shorts in the ending period, the final of which came with just over three minutes remaining. Wooster had two looks following its 57th minute penalty corner. Senior
Naledi Jani's shot before Zehnal's was blocked en route to the cage.
DePauw's goal came from
Helen Harpenau in the final minute of the third quarter. The Tigers' initial shot was stopped by Scots' 'keeper
Nono Kauffman, but the rebound went about five yards out. Harpenau was there and threaded the shot through the Scots' back line, which attempted to make the defensive save.
Kauffman's busy afternoon ended with 15 saves. The senior made six in the third period prior to the Tigers' goal. Three came consecutively following an
Ava Gallagher penalty corner insert in the 37th minute. Kauffman denied
Ellie Lochhead, then
Sydney Commo, and
Gabriella Bourantas' third try at the game's opening score fared no better.
DePauw is now 9-3 on the year and ran its league-leading NCAC record to 7-0. Wooster dropped to 3-8, 2-5 NCAC.
Next, Wooster hosts Washington and Jefferson College (1-8, 1-6 NCAC) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 24. Prior to the game, Wooster will honor its senior class.
