The College of Wooster football team lit up the scoreboard early and often, scoring 55 first-half points and finishing just shy of the program's modern-era scoring record in Saturday's 79-20 rout of Oberlin College at John P. Papp Stadium.
Wooster's 79 points trail just the 84 scored on Kenyon College in 2004 for the most in the modern era of the program's history, which includes all games since 1912, the first season six points were awarded for a touchdown. Wooster scored 11 touchdowns for the second-most in program history, and the 98-yard touchdown pass from senior
Michael Boyle to junior
Chance Bennett in the fourth quarter tied the program's longest passing play record.
Wooster's stout defense primed the offense for success, taking the ball away from Oberlin for the first of five times on the opening drive.
Daniel Pressley coughed up the ball on a second-play-from-scrimmage rush, with junior defensive back
Charlie Scoggin emerging from the pile with the fumble recovery. Junior
Austin Fancher rushed in from a yard out to open the game's scoring with 9:58 on the first-quarter clock.
Pressley's fumble proneness continued on the next drive, when a host of Wooster players in the pile stopped the Yeomen's tailback's progress. The ball came out with junior linebacker
Cam Crago recovering the fumble, and four plays later, sophomore quarterback
Damon Hooks sold the play action and cruised into the end zone on a 7-yard keeper.
A third straight Oberlin turnover made it 21-0 with just under three minutes in the opening quarter. This time, Wooster's defense did the scoring, as first-year linebacker
Marky Floyd Fitzgerald picked
Massimo Vilet off at the 35-yard line and hurdled over a Yeomen player trying to make the tackle on his way to the pick six.
In the second, Hooks broke free for a 15-yard keeper on the second play of the quarter before finding Bennett for a 37-yard touchdown pass with 4:51 to go before halftime. Sophomore
Nolan Hendricks' fifth of 10 extra points made it 35-7. Next, Wooster went deep again, taking a shot on third-and-9 that first-year wideout
Logan Hupp hauled in at Oberlin's 14 and went the rest of the way for the 58-yard touchdown score.
Wooster was not done, capping a 5-play, 53-yard drive with a 2-yard Fancher run in the final minute of the first half, then sophomore defensive back
Grady Harban picked
Ben Suler off and ran the interception return back 36 yards to push Wooster over 50 first-half points.
Cameron Burke cost Oberlin in a big way late in the third, getting flagged for pass interference, then Wooster had 15 more yards tacked on for unsportsmanlike conduct after the Yeomen defensive back bumped an official while protesting the interference call. Boyle capitalized, taking a shot for the end zone once the ball was spotted at Oberlin's 26 finding an open first-year
Breylon McDuffie for the Scots' eighth touchdown of the day.
Wooster was faced with third-and-9 from its own 2-yard line on the first play of the fourth quarter and Boyle looked for Bennett, who caught the pass at the Scots' 40 and went the remaining 60 yards for the record-tying 98-yard touchdown reception. Boyle capped the scoring, finding first-year wideout
Landon Iden for a 32-yard touchdown with 11:44 remaining in the game.
Hooks completed 11-of-16 passed for 202 yards and two touchdowns before Boyle relieved and went 6-of-8 passing for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Bennett went for 173 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. Fancher led Wooster to a season-high 181 rushing yards with 93 on just 13 carries.
Defensively, first-year linebacker
Anthony Nespeca and Scoggin finished with six tackles each. Twenty-four players had at least one tackle in the game, and first-year defensive back
Anthony Pastella had the Scots' third interception, picking off Villet at the Scots' 1-yard line.
Oberlin's quarterbacks combined to go 13-of-29 passing for 207 yards, most of which came once Wooster pulled the starters. The Yeomen had just two first downs in the first half and did not get their third until the final three minutes of the third quarter.
JJ Racz was Oberlin's bright spot, catching four passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.
Peyton Rough led the defense with 11 tackles and an 11-yard sack on Hooks.
Wooster outgained Oberlin 557-254 and held the Yeomen to 2-of-13 on third down.
Wooster is now 2-4 on the year and 2-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Oberlin dropped to 0-6, 0-5 NCAC.
Next, Wooster is off to No. 16 John Carroll University (5-1, 4-1 NCAC) for a 1:05 p.m. contest on Saturday, October 24.
