The College of Wooster football team's defense played well again, but the offensive struggles continued in Saturday's 14-0 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University at historic Selby Stadium.
Ohio Wesleyan recovered the game's opening kickoff, as the Battling Bishops turned to a short 25-yard pooch kick.
Mysaun Sanders had a couple key rushes before
Brady Morrell connected with
Will Kepple for a 4-yard touchdown with 11:52 remaining in the opening quarter. The other touchdown in the game came when
Giovanni Rufus rushed in from a yard out with 10:57 to go in the fourth.
Wooster forced a pair of three-and-outs following Ohio Wesleyan's first touchdown drive. On the first, senior defensive tackle
Donovon Jackson and first-year end
Brody Eckelbarger stopped
Reed Wehr at the line on a third-and-4 play. On the next drive, sophomore defensive back
Grady Harban broke up a third-down pass intended for
Jordan Bryant at Wooster's 30-yard line. Ohio Wesleyan found some success on its fourth drive of the game, which ultimately ended with junior defensive back
Damion Cunningham breaking up a fourth-down pass intended for
Jordan Ghant in the final 35 seconds.
Turnovers undid the Scots' momentum in the second quarter. First-year wideout
Zeek Seraphin secured a 22-yard reception on a
Michael Boyle pass before Wooster turned the ball over on the fumble. First-year defensive end
Jacob Dudek got the ball right back, as Rufus was stripped of possession, with senior defensive back
Brock Sivon securing the recovery. Wooster got down to Ohio Wesleyan's 2-yard line, thanks to the Scots' line opening 9-, 6-, and 14-yard holes for junior running back
Austin Fancher. Wooster went for the tie on fourth down and was unable to convert on the pass attempt.
Wooster copied Ohio Wesleyan's plan to open the second half sending a pooch kick 20 yards. A Battling Bishop up returner missed a diving fair catch, setting first-year linebacker
Marky Floyd Fitzgerald up for the recovery. However, Wooster's drive stalled when Ohio Wesleyan's
Vicean Sample picked Boyle off in the end zone.
Strong defense kept Wooster in it, as the Scots kept the Battling Bishops pinned in for their third three-and-out of the afternoon. Cunningham's big afternoon continued with a third-quarter interception just shy of the red zone. Later, Harban and first-year defensive back
DaJahn Corbin spilled Rufus for a two-yard loss in the fourth when the Battling Bishops went for it on fourth-and-2.
Wooster was limited to 146 yards of offense and turned the ball over five times. Boyle went 7-of-18 passing for 67 yards, but was picked three times. Fancher ended the day with 58 yards on 23 carries. Zeraphin led the receivers with 24 yards on two receptions.
Wooster's defense was led by Sivon's 16 tackles and 11 from junior linebacker
Cam Crago. Dudek and Corbin added 10 stops each.
Ohio Wesleyan was equally as ineffective passing the football, as two Battling Bishop quarterbacks combined to go 8-of-25 for 81 yards. Rufus was the difference on the ground, averaging 5.3 yards per tote. He rushed for 106 yards on 20 carries.
Braydon Pavlus had two of Ohio Wesleyan's three interceptions.
Carson Rust was the leading tackler with six. The Battling Bishops had 293 yards of total offense.
Wooster is now 1-4 and 1-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Ohio Wesleyan moved to 2-3, 1-3 NCAC.
Wooster is idle until a 3 p.m. home game against Oberlin College (0-5, 0-4 NCAC) on Saturday, October 17.
