Scots Secure Unbeaten Conference Record

Crompton's late goal sends Wooster over Kenyon, 2-1

After clinching the North Coast Athletic Conference title last game, it was a treat, not a trick, for The College of Wooster women's soccer team on Saturday after they defeated Kenyon College, 2-1, to wrap up its NCAC season with an unbeaten record.

On a moderately chilly Halloween afternoon game, Wooster jumped out to an early lead thanks to a score in the eighth minute from junior Annie Henegar. Henegar made a nice deke of her defender and then scored off her left foot as the ball bounced off the inside of the right post and went in.

Wooster held that lead through halftime despite an ongoing attack from Kenyon (7-2-7, 3-1-3 NCAC), who suffered their first NCAC loss on the season. However, the Owls finally got one across in the 58th minute as Fiona Dougherty scored inside the box after finding her way in after receiving the ball from near midfield.

Wooster (11-3-3, 6-0-1 NCAC) saw some great looks late including a near second goal for Henegar with about 23 minutes left. The junior had a fast break opportunity, but Kenyon keeper Lila Michael extended just enough to make the clutch save.

Yet, an even better look came in the 87th minute when Wooster was awarded a free kick just outside the top left corner of the penalty box. That's when senior Bella Crompton launched one off her right foot and right into the back of the net.

Wooster held on the rest of the way, withholding a Kenyon attack that eventually outshot Wooster 16-7 for the game.

Keeper Lucy Carlin made five saves for the Scots. Kenyon's Michael made two saves, after coming into play in the second half.

The last time a team won the NCAC unbeaten came back in 2019 when DePauw University went 6-0-2. It was also the year Wooster won the conference tournament.

Now, Wooster with the top seed holds home field advantage for the tournament. They open with a 2 p.m. Wednesday kickoff against fourth-seed John Carroll University (5-8-4, 3-2-2 NCAC).

Kenyon earned the third seed and will head to Denison University (8-2-5, 4-0-3 NCAC) for its semifinal match on Wednesday.
