Offense On Point in Sunday 6-0 Win

Wooster scores most goals in nearly three years

The College of Wooster field hockey team found its offensive firepower, hanging six goals on host Transylvania University in Sunday afternoon's shutout win at Pat Deacon Stadium.

Wooster's scoring frenzy started with senior Audrey McKenna connecting from the top through traffic in the 11th minute. Senior Melinda Lazenby inserted a corner from the opposite side of McKenna's shot, and the ball worked its way to the midfielder for the score from senior Naledi Jani.

Finishing rebounds was Sunday's theme, as three of the Fighting Scots' six goals came from them. Sophomore Izzie Kline scored a pair of rebound goals, with those coming in the 15th and 33rd minutes. On the first, junior Frankie Zehnal's midrange back-hander was saved by Transylvania's Graci Adcock. That left Kline all alone with the Pioneers' 'keeper on the rebound chance.

The 33rd-minute goal saw McKenna check the ball away from a Transylvania player and send it ahead to Zehnal. The Scots' top forward played the ball around the last Transylvania defender, leading to a two-on-goalie breakaway chance for the Scots. Kline's first shot was knocked down by Adcock's blocker, then the Scots' forward tucked the rebound away into the lower left corner for her sixth goal of the fall.

Zehnal scored the Scots' third rebound goal of the game. Her pressure deep in Transylvania's end took the ball away from the Pioneer looking to clear, leaving the Scots' forward all alone with Adcock. Adcock stopped the first shot but had no answer for Zehnal's rebound score that made it 5-0 in the 38th minute.

Zehnal tacked on a second goal in the contest in the final three minutes of the fourth, charging in from the wing and firing score six of the fall into the lower left corner.

Wooster's other goal came from senior Allie Toombs, who scored for the first time as a Scot. A feed to the near post from McKenna hit off a Transylvania player's stick and was directed to Toombs, who fired cross cage into the lower left corner to make it 3-0 in the 23rd minute.

Shots favored Wooster 12-7 in the game. Senior Nono Kauffman made five saves for a second shutout on the week. Adcock stopped four Wooster shots.

Of note, Sunday's six goals marked the most for Wooster since hanging eight on Oberlin College on October 14, 2023.

Wooster improved to 3-6, 2-3 North Coast Athletic Conference. Transylvania, a NCAC affiliate member in field hockey, is now 0-7, 0-5 NCAC.

Next, Wooster is at John Carroll University (2-7, 1-3 NCAC) for a noon contest on Saturday, October 10.
