Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Quick-Strike Scots Cruise Past Otterbein, 20-6

Kellogg now third in program history in scoring

Total control was established early by The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team which had 6-0 and 9-0 runs in Wednesday's 20-6 rout of Otterbein University at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (3-0), which entered the day with NCAA Div. III's No. 1 scoring offense, flexed its muscles early, as the Fighting Scots struck for six goals in the first period. Senior Lane Kellogg started the scoring spree with 11:24 on the clock, yet it was Wooster's last three goals that were perhaps its most impressive in the opening stretch.

First-year Jack Nolan went the distance after picking off a Max Esque pass for his first collegiate goal, and he is the latest Scots' long-stick defensive midfielder to find the scoring column. Sophomore Jack Holub made it 5-0 when he finished a pass from Kellogg, and the attacker scored again nine seconds later. Senior Owen Bosland quickly won the faceoff, and junior Sam Green worked the ball to Holub for the lightning-quick score.

The victory was well in hand during the fourth quarter, and for good measure, the Scots blitzed the Cardinals with two more goals in a nine-second span. Junior Baird Hruska scored in transition to make it 18-5 with 10:22 to play. Sophomore Domenic Cuda scooped up the groundball on the ensuing faceoff before senior Rowan Piani found Green open for the fast strike.

In between the pair of quick consecutive goals, Wooster took a 12-2 halftime lead and saw its advantage climb to 16-2 in the third when first-year Ian Marsland found Holub for the attacker's fifth goal of the night. Wooster fended off a two-minute non-releasable penalty during its 9-0 stretch, as sophomore Will Crane scored with the Scots a player down. Wooster even won the faceoff a player down, thanks to Cuda's quick stickwork on the wing. The ensuing possession enabled Wooster to burn off the rest of the penalty before Green's shot was stopped by Otterbein's (1-2) Zach Courie.

Kellogg moved past Frank Windsor for third on Wooster's all-time scoring list and above Vinny DiLeo for third on the career points list during Wednesday's win. The senior scored five goals and passed out four assists. His helper on Holub's goal with 4:47 left in the second period marked assist 100, a total only three other players in program history have hit.

Holub is at 16 goals through three games following his five-goal night. Crane pumped in three goals, while Green and senior Austin Jourde both finished with three-point nights.

Cuda aided Bosland to a 15-of-26 night on faceoffs and had 13 groundballs overall. His five caused turnovers were backed up by senior Sutton Ursillo's four. Green and Piani caused two turnovers each on the ride. Sophomore Case Lowery made eight saves.

Zach Mulligan accounted for half of Otterbein's goals. Nick Miller led the defensive unit with seven groundballs and two caused turnovers. Courie ended the night with 12 saves.

Wooster almost doubled up Otterbein on shots, 52-28. Wooster went 19-of-24 on clears to a 20-of-31 mark for Otterbein. The Scots logged 44 groundballs, five more than the Cardinals.

Next, Wooster is at Capital University (0-2) for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 28.
