The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team used a strong second half to blow past Capital University in non-conference action, winning by a final score of 18-8 inside Bernlohr Stadium.
Â
It was all Capital (0-3) early, as the Comets netted the first three goals of the game. Junior
Sam Green used a man-up advantage to his advantage for the Fighting Scots' first score at the 6:43 mark. Wooster (4-0) won the ensuing faceoff and worked the ball up the field and back to Green for his second goal. A few minutes passed before junior
John Allen Ginder evened things up at 3-3.
Â
The Comets scored off a second-chance opportunity on the opening possession of the second quarter. Ginder's second goal tied the game again at 4-4, which became a characteristic mark of a back-and-forth frame. Capital's
Aiden Evans regained the lead for the Comets at the 8:54 mark before sophomore
Jack Holub found the evening score just a couple of minutes later. Senior
Lane Kellogg gave Wooster its first lead as the game went into halftime with a 6-5 score.
Â
Wooster's offense came to life after the intermission with a 4-0 run across most of the third quarter, featuring a pair of goals from senior
Austin Jourde. The Comets finally found the back of the net at the 2:21 mark and then used a man-up advantage for another quick score, trimming the Scots' lead down to 10-7. However, first-year
Alec Siegel had his own quick answer to put the Scots back up by four scores at the end of the period.
Â
Ginder scored off the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter, just 10 seconds into action. Five minutes of play passed rather uneventfully before Wooster exploded on offense again with four goals from four different Scots. Junior
Baird Hruska and first-year
Harry Sorger capped off the afternoon with a goal each for the 18-8 final.
Â
Matching his season- and career-high of four goals was Ginder, who led the Scots' offense. Jourde and Kellogg had identical stat lines of two goals and two assists while Green, Holub, and Hruska were the other multi-goal scorers for the Scots. Sophomore
Domenic Cuda led the defensive effort once again with game-high tying marks of 10 groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Â
Evans was the only Comet to score more than once, while junior
Colton Woods dished out a game-high three assists. Senior
Freddy Noday had a strong performance, matching Cuda's game high of 10 groundballs while also dominating the faceoff circle at a 12-for-17 clip.
Â
Sophomore
Case Lowery earned the win in the cage, making eight saves. He was relieved by fellow sophomore
Charlie Zabatta, who stopped the only shot on goal he faced on the afternoon. Their Capital counterpart, sophomore
Wyatt Stemler, made a game-high nine saves in the loss.
Â
The Comets dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 22-of-30, but struggled in turnovers (29 to Wooster's 17) and clears (13-of-23 to 27-of-33). Groundballs were fairly even with Wooster having the slight 37-33 edge. The Scots doubled up Capital on caused turnovers, though, 16-8, and were more aggressive on the offensive end of the field, with a 48-27 and 27-17 advantage in shots and shots on goal, respectively.
Â
Wooster begins a weekend road trip to Michigan on Friday, March 6, to take on Calvin University at 4:00 p.m. on Zuidema Field.
