GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A pair of undefeated teams in The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team and Calvin University battled well into the night on Friday, but after a lightning delay and an overtime period the Knights proved victorious, 14-13.
Both teams had key playmakers down the stretch. For Calvin (4-0), it was
Braden Carpenter who scored six of Calvin's last seven goals, including the game winner in overtime.
Wooster (4-1) had the combo of
Jack Holub and
Lane Kellogg, with Holub scoring and Kellogg assisting on each of Wooster's last three goals.
Carpenter finished with a game-high six goals.
David Blackmon added four.
For Wooster, Holub led with five goals, while
Owen Thompson added three. Kellogg assisted on six goals.
Domenic Cuda tallied seven caused turnovers.
After a 2-2 first quarter, Wooster looked to be pulling away after a 5-1 second period, which saw scoring from five different Scots.
Calvin gained ground in the third, ultimately cutting Wooster's lead to one at 8-7.
To open the fourth, Wooster had a clean breakaway goal thanks to Cuda who turned a caused turnover to an assist as Kellogg scored his lone goal of the game to make it 9-7.
The Scots then got a sneaky goal from
Alec Siegel, scoring after making a move from behind the goal. Calvin answered with back-to-back goals from Carpenter to make it a 10-8 game.
Holub found another opportunity with nine minutes left thanks to the assist from Kellogg to give Wooster the two-goal lead again.
Carpenter brought Calvin within one with his third straight goal, but Wooster's Holub-Kellogg connection struck again to make it 12-10.
Yet, Carpenter found the back of the net again for his fourth straight to find his team trailing 12-11 with 6:44 remaining. One minute later, he scored his fifth to tie it at 12.
Hudson Thiemann scored to break Carpenter's streak giving Calvin their first lead since the first period.
Wooster won the ensuing faceoff and had two shot opportunities before their shot clock trickled down to zero. From there, a lightning delay forced both teams off the field with 3:42 remaining.
After an hour and a half delay, Calvin started with the ball, but turned it over, allowing Wooster an opportunity to tie, and they did just that. Of course, it was Holub scoring and Kellogg assisting for Wooster's third straight goal.
The Scots had a couple more shots before the end of regulation - one saved and one wide - as the two teams went to overtime tied at 13.
Wooster had the first shot of the overtime period but it was saved. After a pair of turnovers, Calvin wound up with possession. A long pass up the field to Blackmon then found Carpenter near the left post who scored the game winner.
Wooster outshot Calvin 40-38 and limited Calvin to succeeding in just 14 of its 27 clear attempts. Calvin totaled 47 groundballs to Wooster's 40 and found success winning 24 of 31 faceoffs.
Wooster turns around to face another opponent from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association on Saturday, traveling to the MIAA preseason favorite Hope College (3-0) on Saturday.
