LOUISVILLE – The College of Wooster softball team used a five-run sixth inning to catapult them to its first win of the season in a 7-6 victory over Spalding University on Saturday.
In the first game of the afternoon, Wooster took a tough 3-2 loss versus Coe College.
But against Spalding, Wooster got seven solid frames from starter
Jillian Meszaros who struck out three and gave up just three earned runs.
Wooster answered Spalding's offense twice in the game. After Spalding went up 2-0 in the second, Wooster scored two in the third. When Spalding took the 4-2 lead in the fifth, that's when Wooster went to work to go ahead 7-4.
A boost came off the bench as junior
Jasmine Mueller gave Wooster just their second extra base hit of the weekend with a one-out double. A walk and a single loaded the bases but a pop up put Wooster down to its final out.
The inning was extended with an error at shortstop, which gave Wooster its third run. From there, senior
Emma Hetkey ripped a two-run single to right field to make it a 5-4 game before classmate
Julia Jennings found the gap in right center to put Wooster ahead 7-4.
Errors hurt the Scots in the sixth and the seventh as Spalding got one back in both innings. However, they ended the game with the tying run on second base on a ground out to Meszaros.
Wooster collected seven hits. Hetkey went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Jennings went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Cate Barkdoll and
Ella Wolff each collected an RBI as well.
In the Saturday opener, Coe put its first two batters on and brought both home in a four-hit inning off Wooster starting pitcher
Tori Conner.
Conner calmed down and did not allow another run to cross until the sixth. She allowed three runs over six innings and struck out five.
Wooster collected just two hits outside of a two-run, three-hit third inning. Wooster had three singles in the inning, with one run scoring on a sacrifice fly from Jennings and another when Hetkey scored on a passed ball.
Coe starting pitcher
Isabella Yell was chased after the third and in relief came
Natalie Hitt who collected the win, throwing four innings and allowing just one hit.
Wooster has two more games in Kentucky on Sunday. They will square off against Coe at 10 a.m. before ending with a game against Transylvania University at 2:30 p.m.
