The College of Wooster women's basketball team reached double digit wins for the first time in well over a decade after taking care of Oberlin College, 60-57, in an important North Coast Athletic Conference game on Wednesday.
Wooster secured its 10th win for the first time since the 2009-10 Scots accomplished the feat. They finished 11-15. More importantly, however, the win, which broke a six-game skid, keeps Wooster in contention for upcoming NCAC Tournament.
Â
JuniorÂ
Ace Sturdivant led the way for Wooster with 19 points, including a pair of clutch free throws to cap a 10-point fourth quarter. Sturdivant also had a well-rounded game with a game-high seven assists and tying for a team-high six rebounds.
Â
SophomoreÂ
Mackenzie Riccitelli was efficient with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. She also had seven steals, which was one shy of her season-high, which she earned at Oberlin earlier this season.
Â
JuniorÂ
Abby Henegar added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench. First-yearÂ
Pink Sturdivant added six points and six rebounds.
Â
For Oberlin (6-14, 2-7 NCAC),Â
Angela Kumler was hard to stop, scoring a game-high 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting.
Krystal Montas added 12 points and seven rebounds, and
Gabby Peña-Hilzen finished with 11 points.
Â
Wooster (10-10, 2-7 NCAC) and Oberlin got off to a 7-7 start before Oberlin went on a 7-0 run for the early lead. Their zone defense was giving the Scots trouble as Oberlin led 14-10 after the first half.
Wooster responded, however, with their own 7-0 run in the second quarter.
Pink Sturdivant tied the game and gave Wooster the lead in two possessions, while Riccitelli sunk a 3-pointer to force an Oberlin timeout.
Â
A 20-11 second quarter gave Wooster a five-point lead at halftime, and they would never trail again for the rest of the game.
Â
That was thanks to Wooster's best run of the game, which started in the second and ended in the third. It was a 12-0 spurt that gave Wooster's its largest lead midway through the third at 14.
Â
Oberlin clawed back in the fourth, but
Ace Sturdivant made sure Wooster kept its lead. The junior hit a big layup to make it 56-51 with 2:21 remaining.
Â
Later, when Oberlin cut the lead to one with 36 seconds remaining, Sturdivant used Wooster's next possession to not only kill time but force two free throws, which she connected on.
Â
Finally, Oberlin's last chance with four seconds remaining was stopped by the Wooster defense.
Â
Wooster shot 37 percent (21-57) to Oberlin's 39 percent (20-51), but where Oberlin made just two 3-pointers (14 percent), Wooster connected on seven (26 percent). Wooster also got it done at the foul line, shooting 92 percent (11-12), while Oberlin stayed close at 88 percent (15-17).
Â
Oberlin played just eight players total, allowing Wooster's bench to outscore the Yeowomen 14-0. Wooster also held the rebounding battle 33-30 and kept Oberlin's second chance opportunities at just four points (8-4).
Â
With just five games remaining, focus shifts to upcoming NCAC Tournament. Top six create the field and with the win, Wooster and Oberlin sit tied in sixth place.
Â
The Scots head to Denison (18-1, 7-1 NCAC) on Saturday to face one of the conference's top teams.
