The College of Wooster baseball team came out ahead following a series of early crooked numbers in Sunday's 9-7 win over State University of New York at Oneonta, which gave the Fighting Scots the series win at Art Murray Field.
Wooster (4-2) hung a five spot on Oneonta (2-3) during its first trip to the dish. Junior left fielder
Andrew Kerr made it 5-0 with his two-out single up the middle. Oneonta answered right back with a six-run second, half of which came in on
Brendan Duffy's bases-clearing double to left.
Wooster rallied in the third, scoring four times to take a 9-6 lead. Senior catcher
Colin Leslie legged out a bloop double that fell in between Oneonta's second baseman and center fielder. Leslie and first-year designated hitter
Owen Sherrill moved up on sophomore third baseman
Maanav Bhatt's sacrifice bunt, which set the stage for sophomore second baseman
Luke Rizzo's two-run single up the middle.
Next, Rizzo stole second and scored when sophomore center fielder
Aidan Krantz smoked an opposite-field single to right. Krantz scored from first when first-year right fielder
Matt Herlick roped a double up the alley in left center.
Sophomore left-hander
James MacMillan (1-0) was sharp in his longest relief outing. The left-hander worked 3 2/3 innings, during which he allowed a run on three hits and struck out four. In the sixth, junior right-hander
Constantine Vernadakis took over with a 2-0 count on Duffy, Oneonta's star slugger. Duffy swung at the first Vernadakis pitch, sending a harmless grounder Rizzo's way. Vernadakis then struck out
Joe LoMonaco, keeping a pair of Red Dragons stranded on the bases.
Wooster was constantly working around traffic on the bases, as Oneonta stranded 15 runners in the game. The Scots escaped a bases-loaded situation in the eighth. Bhatt momentarily bobbled a grounder sent his way with two outs but recovered in plenty of time to make the play at first and keep Wooster's lead at two.
Oneonta threatened again in the ninth, getting the tying run on base. A liner off
Nick Jacoby's bat found Rizzo's glove, and the Scots' second baseman nearly doubled up
Zachary Rowe at second to end the game. However, Rowe was ruled safe, getting in just ahead of the tag of first-year shortstop
Noah Lindberg.
Rizzo and Kerr accounted for five of Wooster's nine RBI in the game. Leslie was the lone Scot with a multi-hit game. Sophomore
Carter O'Neill nailed down the save, getting the final four outs. He froze
Ryan Cronin on a fastball that painted the outside corner for the final out of the game.
Duffy went 2-for-4 with four RBI for Oneonta.
Alex Halwick led all players with three base knocks.
Oneonta's
Martin Thorsland (0-1) did not fare well in the start, allowing nine runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Caleb Nelson was dominant in relief, not allowing a hit in his 4 1/3 innings, during which he struck out six.
Next, Wooster is slated to host La Roche University (0-5) at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4 at Art Murray Field.
