Leslie the Spark Offensively and Defensively in Saturday Win

Senior throws out base stealer to end nightcap

Senior catcher Colin Leslie caught two Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg runners stealing, and The College of Wooster baseball team turned in a strong pitching outing to win Saturday's nightcap 4-3. Earlier in the day, Penn State Harrisburg snapped Wooster's eight-game winning streak with a 7-4 win.

In the nightcap, Leslie ended the game by throwing out Penn State Harrisburg's Tim Haftl at second base. Haftl representing the tying run, reaching via a one-out infield single. Leslie's first catch came on the back end of a strike out-throw out double play that ended the first inning.

Junior Michael Scarpelli (2-2) cruised through the first four innings, setting down 11 straight following the game-opening walk that was erased by Leslie. Scarpelli exited after 6 1/3 innings, during which he allowed three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts. Sophomore James MacMillan went the rest of the way, logging 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief for the save.

Leslie walked in the fourth inning, moved up to second on a passed ball, and scored when sophomore third baseman Maanav Bhatt roped a two-out single to left center. The senior catcher doubled as the offensive hero, clubbing a two-run homer to left field in the sixth inning that made it 4-3. Prior to the go-ahead round tripper, junior left fielder Koa Siu singled through the left side.

Siu went 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Bhatt and first-year shortstop Noah Lindberg were the other Scots with multi-hit games.

Cade Baker was the losing pitcher for Penn State Harrisburg. He allowed two runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. The Lions' Nathan Lapp had two hits.

Wooster (11-3) was dealt a four-run hole in the first inning of the opener. Blaine Waltimyer logged the first big knock of the day, legging out a triple to right center to knock in the game's first run.

Wooster was down 7-0 when it plated two runs in the fifth inning. First-year right fielder Matt Herlick walked to lead off the inning and was 90 feet from home following back-to-back groundouts. Lindberg kept the rally alive with an infield single. He stole second and scored on Siu's RBI single.

Senior designated hitter Ryan Kramer upped the home run counter to four with a solo shot in the seventh that pulled Wooster within 7-4.

Sophomore Dame Frayne (3-1) took his first loss of the year. He allowed four runs on three hits in four innings. First-year Owen Sherrill closed out the game with two innings of shutout baseball.

Siu had two of Wooster's six hits in the series opener.

Dylan Sattazahn was the winning pitcher with an inning of relief. Bradyn Eckert nailed down his third save of the year. Waltimyer ended the opener 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

The teams square off in the rubber match on Sunday at noon (note the earlier start) at Art Murray Field. Wooster is 2-0 on the year in rubber matches.
